The first official DVXuser short film on DVD !

Re: The first official DVXuser short film on DVD !

Hello jleo, thanks for your post - saved me a looonnnggg drive...

RE: Thanks! good thing i didn't pitch a tent in front of future shop to be 1st in line...they should carry the feature version later, right?

I thought of tossing my bag into the car...and you might have
seen me sleeping in the parking lot...

RE: "yes you can get em at futureshop" to a "Trainee"

hummmmmm, got a hunch I had better hit the enter key,
before I stick my foot in my mouth...

nickybee, damn glad you posted:
"very funny...
no unfortunately you cannot just pick them up -
but obviously if you do order being so close -
you will get them very quickly..."

Within 30 secs of seeing your original post,
I was ordering - thanks Pay Pal!

jleo,
I am envious of your location - IMHO one of the TOP
West Coast cities - I have been visiting or passing through
for some 30 years - my PoCo friend relocated to Pt Roberts
last Oct I was in Abbortsford - flew in with my dear friend
from Victoria where he lives and keeps his aircraft
snip - sorry for the rambling...my 35mm stills archives has a
couple of chapters of Vancouver - started about 1968...
I am new in the dvxuser and hang out down in the Cafe,
if you get down there, look me up, I'd be glad to see you.

Best regards,

- BRM -

Re: The first official DVXuser short film on DVD !

thanks BRM...we were under the same sun a while back...arizona - california ... i was in L.A. for almost 8 years

... lately it's been pure X-files weather in Vancouver with non-stop 24 hour rain, warm Hawaiian Air currents and our regular grey skys...

the only other DVD's i've seen in a brushed aluminum case are some special release Walt Disney films...

Re: The first official DVXuser short film on DVD !

I got my copy yesterday. The footage and story were great. I don't mean to be too straightforward with my questions, but would you or have you (so far) revealed your budget for this film? Don't have to answer this, but with such a cool looking flick I wonder what would take me to produce something with such a high production value. Thanks !

Re: The first official DVXuser short film on DVD !

Nick,

Watched the DVD today - unfortunatley it was damaged in transit - the box was bashed to hell and the DVD is a little shaky- if I fast-foward or rewind, the DVD stops playing, but it still works, so I can't complain!

Well done, good luck with the 'big' version!!!

Can I ask, what did you use to author the DVD? Really love the scene selection menu, brilliantly done! :D

Re: The first official DVXuser short film on DVD !

likewise - personally I was inspired by the total recall DVD box - and I wanted to emboss the art history ones - me and jarred also tried electroplating - but it was too complicated...so screen printing (and then later die-cut stickers) was the way we went...

Re: The first official DVXuser short film on DVD !

the budget used to be listed in lots of places - but it was 10,000 CDN - at the time about 6-7000 USD...

bear in mind that with this kind of production you call in every favor you can - so the actual "book rate" of the people and the gear you are using doesn't apply...

still even all that taken into consideration I'm incredibly proud by what we pulled off in a 4 day 10,000 CDN dollar shoot...

Re: The first official DVXuser short film on DVD !

I'm sorry your box was so damaged in transit - I must admit you are the first report I've had of this - if you want I can always send you another DVD - what kind of DVD player are you doing this on ? (the fast forwarding issue may be player specific rather than a disc thing...?)

as far as authoring is concerned I do most of the complicated stuff in DVD maestro (essentially DVDstudio pro before apple bought it) - dvdlab pro is similar enough if you feel like learning it...

The thing with the scene selection menu is that all that crap (and I'm referring to the lucasfilm ones and the harry potter ones) is essentially done by hand and it's kind of a pain but it looks cool in the end - basically you make a bunch of movies to simulate interactivity - in the case of the scene selection menu it's slight overkill but I thought it was cool so it stayed - I made 9 or 10 different full screen movies in After effects (for each "chapter" that's visible) and then just flip back and forth between those movies...

good luck

Nick

Re: The first official DVXuser short film on DVD !

I played the DVD on my player, my girfriend's, and my DVD-ROM drive and had the same problems. The DVD-ROM software (PowerDVD) said that the disc was "faulty or damaged"- the damaged box must have something to do with it, because there's a real nasty scratch across the disc. No biggy, please don't trouble yourself with sending another copy, I can still play it - and when am I gonna need to fastforward a 22 minute film?! ;)

I've used DVDlab quite a bit - but usually these days I just use Sony's DVDA 2.0 - does 99% of what I want easier...

Thanks for the reply, Nick

Re: The first official DVXuser short film on DVD !

Thanks for that...It would be a little hard for me to send you a replacement right now in any case since I'm in the UK (tail end of the West Africa trip for another dvx project www.contractiraq.com)...

In fact - here's a general note to everyone...thanks for the orders received in the meantime - they will be shipped out as soon as I return to Vancouver - on Valentine's day.

Re: DVD-A 2.0 - I find it annoying for anything other than really simple discs...but as ever these kinds of things are personal preferences

Re: The first official DVXuser short film on DVD !

I learned about Art History via the DVXuser.com web site and ordered it. Wow, what a great production! Great story, editing, score, everything just works so well! I'm very happy with this short.

I've worked with kids trying to get shorts done locally and have seen some very interesting concepts. But this one just blows me away. The story line, the music score (I'm a composer and notice scores in more detail than many of my peers), the editing, it all is just done so well. This movie works, and works very well!

Dare I say it? This movie rocks, dude!

Again, this short is just super fantastic. Y'all did a killer job! I've watched it a zillion times and just don't get tired of it. I'm trying to get as many people to watch it as I can down here in the swamps of south Louisiana.

Y'all did good, cher!

Re: The first official DVXuser short film on DVD !

Yes - they (or rather) we - did...

IT was shot with the old (vanilla) DVX100 - i.e. not the A model...though I suspect we might have been tempted to use it even if we were shooting with the A.

Re: The first official DVXuser short film on DVD !

Really ??
That's very odd - did you ever write to me about that (replies to the order confirmation email get sent to me personally) - please email or PM me your details (i.e. the name and address you used) - it could be that paypal forgot to inform me of the order (I've seen that happen before but I usually catch it)

Needless to say this should be fixed asap

Art History gets distribution...

Art History gets distribution...

One of the distributors I contacted with a copy of the film picked it up for distribution - it's a small company - but I was still happy to have someone else out there the work...

Just figured people might want to know...

Re: The first official DVXuser short film on DVD !

I didn't think somebody would order something, pay for it, and not say anything to anybody for "several months"... Man you certainly are the patient type.

Well Nick, I just Paypal'ed you guys 'cause the price for the DVD is a bargain and I'm afraid you guys are gonna' sell out! For anybody who's into the DVX I would regard this as an excellent "how to" video where the subject matter, story-line, actors, and the entire production is fun to watch. I bought the "filters" dvd and I've even enjoyed watching THAT... so I hope that sales have been strong on your first class effort.

Just ordered my copy today! Can't wait to see it. :D

thanks guys...

thanks guys...

Thank you Shaun and Matt for your orders and for the kudos. It's much appreciated - don't worry there are plenty more discs we are in no danger of running out of stock soon.

When you get your discs feel free to ask me more questions if they come up.

Nick

I got my video within 3 days of placing my order. Thanks! The best compliment I can pay you is that I forgot that I wanted to analyze your work after about half-way through... then I just watched the story.

I did notice a couple things in your production that I get in mine too... the DVX could be improved a little in it's response to highlights... and being an audio guy I have to say watch the top right of your screen at around 00:04:15... Super job on the sound though... I really enjoyed it.
