Re: The first official DVXuser short film on DVD !
The scene in the trailer where they go over the plan looks so 16mm...
i mean that as a compliment...that scene alone, probably due to the color of her hair, the spill of light, and the depth...
Re: The first official DVXuser short film on DVD !
thanks hillcity...can't tell if you ordered already - but if you did today - all of them are shipped.
but yeah we were very pleased with the look of a lot of the shots...
believe it or not the shot you describe was a one take deal...we were running out of time in the location (my old apartment) and was supposed to be a 4 setup "masterpiece" turned into a one-shot, one-take deal...
Re: The first official DVXuser short film on DVD !
Thanks for the kudos John...dunno if anyone's seen it but John did an interview about Art History with myself and the lead actress in the film, Dominika Wolski - the text of it (with some pictures) appears at the link below
Re: The first official DVXuser short film on DVD !
I just got my DVD and watched it last night.
Some of that Cinematography is PHENOMENAL. My wife and I couldn't believe it was the DVX. I especially liked the scene in the gym and the scenes in the metal shop - lots of cool atmosphere.
I LOVED the title sequence and the end credits were a blast. How did you get the rights to "Pop Goes the World" (that damn song is stuck in my head now)?
Re: The first official DVXuser short film on DVD !
Just getting my first DVX today so I thought I should throw some amazing stuff done on a DVX in with it. Just purchased it can't wait to learn from you guys....
Re: The first official DVXuser short film on DVD !
Thanks for the praise CMessineo - with stuff like this it's of course a combination of teamwork etc etc...but lots of the cinematography kudos must go to the camera team...Mr. Mahlon Todd Williams and Jarred Land with Todd of course as the DP.
Glad you like the opening titles - I was excited about the double camera stuff too and very glad when I could make it work out (though the aftereffects/photoshop was a little bit of a pain due to parallax problems)
As far as "Pop Goes the World" - when you say how did you ge the rights to it...the simple answer is you phone up and ask for them.
You have to pay a fee - but it's not obscenely large and I believe it makes a difference in how a product is perceived.
You can negotiate the fee to a fairly low amount for festival rights only - but even for selling the DVD (which we do have the music rights for) the numbers are fairly small...
Re: The first official DVXuser short film on DVD !
Just watched the film, and really enjoyed it! I think the opening titles looked excellent with that two camera effect, well worth the effort. Also you really keep the attention span of the viewer with great visuals and solid cuts. I think we all appreciate a behind the scenes to really have insight to how much work goes into these projects.
It's cool to hear that everyone's enjoying their purchase.
All the new orders have been sent out btw.
A DVX'er asked me recently what the preproduction/production/post time was on art history...
The answer is...fairly short.
Pre production (not including about a month or so to write the script) was about a week - 10 days.
the crew was only really available for the technical walkthrough but some key people (Todd, Jarred) were there 4 days before.
Likewise we had a few days worth of contact with actors including 2 readthroughs and a photo shoot - as a bonding experience...
Production - 4 days - not ridiculously long ones at that.
We only had 4 hours of pickup shots to do about a week later and they were strictly the extreme closeups with achromatic diopter.
Post production - the cut was locked and audio done within a month - the opening titles were done over a (very long) 2 day period.
the DVD was not made (and with that the cut was "Fixed" in two places that were annoying me) and pressed for another 2 months after that...but 99% of what was seen at the cast and crew screening was in the DVD....(commentaries etc of course not included)
Re: The first official DVXuser short film on DVD !
Nick, Jarred, and all involved,
Received my copy today. Kudos all around. Really enjoyed it. Very inspiring as to what can be acheived with a DVX. All the best with any upcoming projects.
Re: The first official DVXuser short film on DVD !
Nick,
Last night I watched the film again and also listened to the two commentary tracks.
I really enjoyed it and learned a lot, but I also had a few questions.
1. Why did you leave the boom mike in the shot, instead of cropping it out?
2. In the same scene during a closeup of the guy with the hat on backwards the color suddenly shifts (it gets darker), what happened there?
3. In the scene after they get the printout on the art collector, the scene is really hot, the whites seem almost blown out (ie, on their foreheads and in the windows behind them). Since most of the photography seems so amazing and planned out, I wonder if this was on purpose or just a result of a crazy shooting schedule.
4. Am I mistaken or is the letterboxing on the DVD grey instead of black and if so, why did you choose grey?
5. Finally, is Dominika as crazy as she seems?
Chris
p.s. Jarred, I really enjoyed your making of footage a lot.
