OTHER: The Filmmakers Journal

Hey Guys

It's been a while since I've posted on DVXuser. But I've just launched new web series called 'The Filmmaking Journal' and wanted to share it with you all.

On the series I’ll be sharing filmmaking tips, behind the scenes, interviews with filmmakers, creatives and entrepreneurs so we can learn together! Thought you might be interested :)

Here's the first episode:

I'll be releasing a new episode each week until the end of the year. You can subscribe here: SUBSCRIBE

Also if you've got any filmmaking questions let me know and I'll try and include it in a future ep.

I look forward to hearing from you all soon!

Thanks,

Sebastian

Alright some honest reactions, and I apologize in advance because I'm going to come off as a bit of a dick. I clicked forward when you started the office tour, as by this point the exercise seemed earnest and self-indulgent. If you're going to show us the photos you hang on your wall, they'd better be very strange or funny or telling. As it is, they're perfectly adequate wall hangings, which in the retelling makes me want to put forks in my eyeballs.

I also laughed at the "let's turn on this light," where you turn on the CFL softbox in a room that already has a nasty mix of daylight and tungsten. I interpreted it as "hey everybody, check out my filmmaker lights," which is especially funny given that they're ultra-budget lights on sh***y stands. (Psst...between you and me, I have those same lights.)

When I clicked forward, I saw a mix of exterior shots that included some very nice ones. Then I wondered why you're desaturating all of them (or do my eyes deceive me?). I'd think a key element of New Zealand landscapes is the wonderful color.

Good for you for taking on the project. My advice would be to binge watch Kai on DigitalRev TV (https://www.youtube.com/user/DigitalRevCom) and maybe some Flight of the Conchords. And these are purely for tone, nothing technical. Good luck!

p.s. Couple technical points. 1) When it cuts from montage back to you, the drop in audio quality is jarring. I suspect you used camera sound and didn't normalize your levels in the edit. 2) It might be my personal fixation, but in my mind horizons should either be horizontal or intentionally Dutch. Missing by 5 to 10 degrees all the time looks sloppy. Hope these are useful.

Par for the course. Given that it's a filmmaking forum, I think it beneficial to have the most critical eye possible. Not everyone will agree.

Had I seen this on FB or YouTube first, I'd say "great job" like everybody else. It's clear you're doing a good thing, and my criticisms don't detract from that.

All the best and keep at it.
