A cool short piece on the film restoration of Jaws at Universal.

Steven Spielberg's classic film has been digitally remastered and fully restored. This short video segment takes us into some of the process of that restoration. It's part of Universal's celebration of it's 100th Anniversary. Scheduled to be released this summer on Blu-ray.

Yeah, that's where all those nice toys end up.

When I was teen I called and talked to Bill Varney; at the height of his career he was an Academy Award winning sound mixer at Universal
and was responsible for many sound mixes on major hits. I could talk to him anytime I was curious about something. MCA/Universal always
had good toys as far back as I can remember. Today those tools are now at the finger tips for anyone in the form of software for a few
thousand or less, that cost tens of millions just 20 years earlier in actual hardware rack solutions.

Now is Elon Musk sending his private rockets to the space and all his "Huston" is just about few people with laptops in one room. Compare to NASA.

Photoshop has several artificial inteligence tools. Articles in Forbes and other medias are writen by AI computers for several years and that is just tip of an iceberg. http://blogs.forbes.com/narrativescience/
Smartphones with crazy inteligent apps and sesors in your pocket, artificial composing softwares etc etc

Tough job to be futurist today. Future is now.

on the video portion there are doing a lot, i have seen tons of dvds not getting the frame wobble/vibration treatment.

but then on the audio portion, they are doing a 7.1 surround for no real improvement other than saying 7.1 on the cover.(and the shark says nooooo.)

Great find Pappa! This is one of my if not most favorite films ever. Seen it maybe 500 times. In 1981 my father brought home 2 BETA cassettes and told me to sit down. My Uncle at the time worked at CBS in Chicago and was able to get out these 2 cassettes to my Dad, knowing that Dad's son would forever be changed. I sat there and my Pop pushed play on the first cassette. What appeared on the screen were the famous words "In a galaxy far far away....". I personally owned Star Wars years before it was available to the public in any form. I about passed out.

My pop then went and put the second cassette in. I couldn't hold myself together as I just had gotten my own copy of Star Wars. Then it played and I heard the underwater sounds and then that music. I realized I had JAWS as well.

I watched these betas every time I was sick from school, and at least once a weekend. I still have them. They will be buried with me.

JAWS is the keystone f**k-up production that went on to change how we look at box office hits to this day. It changed cinema and Hollywood forever. RIP Roy Schneider and the great great Robert Shaw!

Those are wonderful childhood memories Dusty to have and thanks for sharing those unforgettable moments. Fun times.... :-) Jaws is absolutely the kick ass film. Even with all the production issues, greatness surfaced.

The Jaws production in many aspects is the poster child for the phrase "Necessity is the Mother of All Invention"

Roy Scheider and Robert Shaw - One of a kinds!

Saw it in the theater when I was just a young lad. Scared the hell out of me! I couldn't even swim in the pool by myself without imagining sharks. LoL

I don't have a problem with this as long as the original lossless mono track is always an option.

Plus, the shark has always said "nooooo!", this is just bringing it more forward in the mix.

Nice find - thanks for posting it!

I was more impressed with the man hours they put in then any particular high end tech they used - looks to be a great restoration of a wonderful film, so win-win.

Yeah back in the days I used to work off those huge SSL boards etc. costing a few hunfred thousand to at least $1 million. 15 years later just about all of its capability is right here on my PC. Look at how far we've reached with digital cameras. I can imagine what it will be like a few years from now.
