The end of 35mm adapers and hv20s....

it'll will be nice however to see a 1.4-2.8 bokeh

what lens was used the one that cam in the kit? which clips had VR on or did they all have it?

Wow, thanks for the clips Kholi.

Compression looks fine, I wont complain. Colors and the general look is great!

BUT THE DAMN WOBBLE, jesus? its so bad, hopefully its not that bad on a tripod or stabilization rig.......NOOO, I WANTED ONE FOR VIDEO, FOR MY STEADICAM...

Kholi if you have time could you do a test on a tripod with steady pans/tilts to see how bad the wobble is?

Thanks

laugh, "ahh shi*"

and, to me, the last clip, being the biggest, didn't seem like it had the resolution the rest of the files did? is it me?

Do you have a lens with a manual/auto switch? If so... try this:

A) Roll the Iris Closed (F22) in Auto Mode
B) Find something that's evenly exposed in your bedroom and aim the camera at it til the auto exposure (or whatever it's doing) stops going crazy
C) AE-L Lock
D) Engage the Manual Iris on your Auto/Manual lens and open it back up to F2.8 or however fast the lens is. You'll notice that you can basically control your F-Stop as though it were manual in real time and see the effects of light being chopped.

You can also point it at the PC monitor to get a higher shutter speed while on F22 and retain the high shutter speed look while engaging the Manual Aperture.

Tell me how clean the image looks in comparison as far as cleanliness.

I'll do a bunch of test footage tomorrow and let you know. I'd do that right now, but I don't have much to compare it to because my only footage was incredibly dark.

RIP d90! :-(.........................

That said, it's quite clear that a large sensor that is 12MP can be great if the makers do their job right. The Jello-vision is way to much for me. I could have settled for at-least the skew of the HV20, not my cell phone though. So 1080P and lower the skew with a 12MP CMOS, then we could have something.

I dont have hope that Nikon will firmware this, however it would be nice if they did, then i would buy. However, Im not wasting the money at this point. Someone needs to send an email to Nikon..

I honestly don't know. I'm looking at a bunch of stuff with different clips from like an hour ago and I'm noticing a LOT I don't like about the video. Extremely noisey in doors. I just don't get how this exposure/shutter thing works. Every time I think I have it figured out it just goes down the drain.

It looks like the darned thing is adding gain to compensate for light, but that's not even right. Outside it's a lot cleaner, inside in low lighting it's not so hot.

Oh, and in the NIKON MANUAL? There's a Warning: (to sum it up)

LV mode, when used too long, will heat the camera's circuits and may cause image noise. When the camera gets too hot LV mode will give a 30 second count down and shut off.

I've gotten that 30s countdown already.

Even with the VR lens it's a lot better. You can still see it on pans, but anything less than a stabilizer won't do. Trying to hold the damned thing out and away from your face instead of supported by your elbows and your eye in the viewfinder? Completely different experience.

Makes me want to throw the camera, to be honest.

VR lens helps that TREMENDOUSLY. I had the 17-35 on when I started futzing around with it.

I'm with you on this one. It's a valiant beginning but something needs to be done about the lack of digital manual controls at the least. The skew would probably take MUCH more processing power and a larger camera, more money, etc etc and frankly...

I'm uploading a clip right now to show this...

A steadier hand and some weight will correct that. They manual controls and the compression are downing me right now. From the get go you should be able to independently adjust Shutter, Aperture, and ISO for the video if you choose to do so and I have to jump through hoops to get around this stuff. The manual tells you NOTHING what-so-ever about the movie function.

Tsk.

Uploading another with the VR lens.

I really appreciate all the info you guys are providing here. I really wanted the D90 to sort of have the all in one package. Video + DSLR Pics.

Now after seeing the videos im not sure. The main thing i dont like is no autofocus mainly because i plan on recording car shows and racing events. The bokeh in video looks amazing, but the shake also looks pretty bad.

I have a question, Will the Canon Powershot TX-1 HD video be similar or way worst than the D90? I know you guys mess with pro stuff like RED or Canon HV20s but the TX-1 is small enough to not be a bulk to carry along with a DSLR. plus Its about $299. Will the D90 just murder this lil Powershot quality wise, or will it balance out with Stereo sound, Autofocus, IS?

Don't let my shakey-ass hands be the end all. To be honest, if you get a cheap glide-cam it'll be solved. I'm not used to holding cameras out in front of myself like that. They're always on a shoulder or being cradled under my arm for handheld.

I'm uploading a clip with the VR lens on.

You can Autofocus right before you shoot, which is kinda neat. After you hit record, though, it's manual all the way.

I can say, right now though: It's not HD worthy. By no means. 540p is stretching it. 480 looks acceptable.

Haha, cool man. Looking forward to the VR vid. But would you recommend the D90 video mode for all around recording? or the TX-1?

HEy Kholi, Thanks for doing all those for us. I have closely watching this discussion from page one. The downloading page is working, but is very slow. any chance upload those movies to Vimeo?? Regards Dallas

Kholi - Thank you for all the uploads. I personally think the footage looks great (at least on my 1280x1024 19" LCD computer monitor). The images are crisp and the colors saturated. I have a feeling there is a way to minimize the "jello effect". Personally I never handhold the camera unless I'm shooting stills, it's usually on a tripod so this just might be the camera for me.

RIP D90?!! I'm hoping it's a little too early to tell.

Keep up the good work!!

Vimeo wasn't showing Kholi any love tonight, and my guess is that he's still busy messing with the camera to bother spending more time fighting with it, but If everybody picks one of those .avis and uploads it to Vimeo themselves, then there would be a lot of new D90 footage up pretty quickly.

I'm with you. It think it really depends on the work you do and how do it.

SaNTi -- I have no experience with the other camera at all. Honestly, the D90 isn't that bad, especially considering interchangeable lenses. That's the major attraction to me. It would still be hard for me to pick between an HF11 w/35mm adapter, rails, etc, etc over a D90. Still learning the camera and I'll probably keep it regardless.

Dallas -- Vimeo is being a wiseass right now. Not sure why but the videos just won't work. =( I wish they would, though. I <3 Vimeo.

Helooka -- I wish my hands were steadier, fact is that I'm used to weight and weight is good. I wouldn't suggest even considering handholdin' this camera without at least a VR lens. Monopods rock the house.

You would see a lot less of the jello effect if the camera were steady. I'm uploadin' a clip right now that shows that.

Rechargin' the battery! Although you're right, everyone punch Vimeo in the e-stomach all at once and see if it'll give in and work. It's been messed up the past few days for whatever reason.

If your hands are too shaky then don't shoot with it handheld. It looks that the better video shot before the camera came out was the stuff on a tripod. If handholding is a limitation we then have to work around it. The other thing is that you have to light what you are shooting the best possible. We all know thats a given. We can't make conclusions until everything is tested, especially, after correctly setting the camera before shooting.

Thanks for reply Texanite & Kholi, will wait until tomorrow, see if Vimeo is working. For now, I even can not visit the Vimeo front page.
