The end of 35mm adapers and hv20s....

RED gets on my nerves sometimes. They really didn't announce anything, except that sometime in the indiscernible future, they are going to make SLR's. How informative. I'm all for competition, but sometimes they just seem like a bunch of one uppers. They should come out with their 5 other products before adding more to the production slate. Jeez.

I just read this on dpreview which confirms what was said earlier:

dpreview said:
Auto Exposure and Auto Focus Lock
one.gif

Pressing this button locks the current exposure and focus, they remain locked for as long as you hold the button even if you press or release the shutter release button. The exact function of this button can be set via CSM f4.
That's just disturbing.

My Red is "a" camera, I have worked with it on many projects with no problems what so ever. Despite some ruff beginnings in software problems, the Red one has been rock-solid for the past 4 months. Just to clear that up. If there is another reason why the Red isnt a Camera, I would love to know, I use it just like every other camera I have used.

This camera seams great on all aspects, except for two things.

Rolling shutter causing wobbles. And this whole thing about a button you need to press and hold in order to lock exposure. I dont believe it, but we'll just have to wait and see.

RED should try to release "a" camera first before they announce anything else.

LOL Hilarious. How "revolutionary" of RED to announce plans for a DSLR that shoots video right on the heels of the D90 release. Must be a bit nervous for their lady Scarlet over there.

Will the Monstro super DSLR be half the price of the D90? Will it be released in beta? Will it require you to hire an additional DIT to get it to work? Will it be unavailable for purchase by 99% of the fanbois?

Go RED!

While I was very very excited about this, just a few things to bear in mind:

(1) Form factor, this was designed as a still DSLR.

(2) the DSP is designed for stills, the movie function is an added feature. Not a dedicated video DSP.

IF only these companies could take the same technology, pack it into camcorder form factor, redesign the DSP for video instead of still then @ this price point, THEN we have a revolution.

We should get together and petition and demand these companies for such a product;

these companies will see the market demand and will produce if there is a demand for it:

it worked for Terminator 3 :)

I love the fact that Red announced an update on a camera they haven't even put out yet. They know how to build some hype.

They have no need to. They're selling lots and lots of smaller cameras for more money. Why sell a perfect high end camera for cost when you can sell a ton of imperfect ones for 100x cost?

no way. i dig the slr form factor and the stealth mode that goes with it.

Thats fine if you can film a feature using that form, of course thats your choice totally.

its just video cameras (and film cameras) have evolved to the form they are today for good design reasons, as has still cameras.

A hammer and a crowbar have their own shapes for a reason.

I'm not saying it should be at that exact cost, they can charge 2x, may be 4x and still sell them, the demands there thats all.

For Gods sake, that is the revolution, or maybe the evolution. A Nikon DSLR with a S35 sensor that shoots 24 FPS @ 720p, Nikon lens, SD media in a format ready for most NLEs? In their first version of the camera? If you can't see the writing on the wall there is something wrong with your vision. There is absolutely nothing wrong with having stills and motion capture in the same camera, none whatsoever. Having total image control and then some for both is fantastic. This camera is so revolutionary that a revolutionary company like Red is talking about their own DSLR now. Before Scarlet's prototype was shown at NAB 2008 I envisioned it more as a DSLR design and now this.
Nikon has no video camera business and this will in fact be their first venture into it. And what a way to break in. The D90 as a motion capture camera will undoubtely have many flaws but it is a wonderful beginning for those of us with vision. I want to be part of their video experiment and at the same time own a terrific camera for my still photography business.
