The DV Rebel's Guide - ASK STU

Hey, guys. Some of you may be familiar with stu's book:

DV Rebel's Guide

Stu Maschwitz (book author) has recently agreed to donate a ton of copies every year to dvxuser members. I'm giving them as prizes for fests and other random things.

This book has always come very highly recommended from anyone I've asked about. I've got a box full of them sitting in my living room right now to go to you guys in the future :)

This thread is kinda meant to be Stu's little DVXuser home. You guys can talk about the book here, and feel free to ask Stu some questions about it and other filmmaking topics. He'll be checking in from time to time to chat and answer questions. Figured we'd give him one place for it all. Think of him as kind of an adjunct professor for DVXuser :)

Anyways, Stu is a great friend and supporter of the indy filmmaker and his book is well worth the read as well. But, you certainly don't have to take my word for it. I'm sure there are other folks out there who would likely agree.

Take care,
Jason

Thanks Jason! It's quite an honor to be welcomed so warmly to the DVXuser community. My membership here and the amazing work you guys have done was a big inspiration to me in writing the Rebel's Guide. It was my dream that The Guide would be an indispensable part of every DVXuser member's kit.

I've always tried to chime in here whenever appropriate, but now you have a thread where you know you can find me.

Hey Stu,

Gage recommended your book and I was blown away by the contents. Excellent read and I was able to apply your AE plug-ins to my twilightfest entry.

Thank you for the inspiring piece of work!

Thanks Neal! That's great that you were able to put the stuff to use on a DVXuser fest entry.

Stu, I just won a copy (thank you Jason) & can't wait to get it! Thanks so much for your support of DVXuser...it is most appreciated. Can't wait to read it cover-to-cover and apply what I learn to my next film.

Cheers!

Hey Stu,
Tons of respect and love for ya man. I have a question that's not disrespectful in the least on my end, so please don't take it that way...so you seem like a guy who's very passionate about narrative filmmaking, and you've got more success than any other known DVXUser, so why haven't you directed, or at least produced or written, a feature length movie? What are you waiting on? Or am I reading you wrong, is that not really your thing?

Hey shawneous, no disrespect taken—that's a totally fair question. The short answer is that I'm working on it! I was the second unit director of Frank Miller's The Spirit, and am busy directing commercials, but directing my own feature is what I would most like to do.

Yeah I've been wanting this to happen for a while. Stu's book getting pimpage here / member's here getting stu's book in their hands.

Stu is responsible for some amazing things like Magic Bullet and being a founder of the VFX company, The Orphanage, which did the yellow meany section of Sin City and all the VFX for the EXCELLENT Korean Horror film THE HOST (net flix it now).

He's an amazing resource to have around.

Check out his "Less is More" / "Milion Dollar Look on a Thousand Dollar Budget" speech at NAB. You'll get a taste of some of what's in the book and see some work by Jesse Soff and Sam Balcomb (Curugon) featured as well.

EDIT: LINK FIXED / SWAPPED 11/22/08
STU's NAB LOW BUDGET VFX SPEECH

Great to have him around. Amazing resource / book.

Stu, your lamens explanation really opened my eyes to color correction and how much more powerful and cinematic I can make my movies, I have since bought Looks and it has made my work all the more sexier.

Stu - I'm so glad we've given you a prominent voice here. It is very deserved and equally welcome. I too read your book with great interest and am anxious to employ what I learned.

I see your are in the bay, just a hop skip and jump from me (I work in Pleasanton and live near Davis). Would sure love to meet up with you sometime ... perhaps even collaborate on some projects.

Either way, welcome to the boards

Larry

That is awesome Stu I didn't know you did any type of directing on The Spirit! I'm sure that was a joy to work with Frank Miller.

I for one would love to see a feature from you!
