SHORT: The Driver.

A short film we made recently for a two week film contest. We shot this short on a Sony NX5u in under two days with just two people. Edited with Final Cut and used lots of SmoothCam filters to make the camera movements flow well. Enjoy and please comment!

I would like to enjoy your film, but then you have to tell me where I can find it ;-)

Well, I really liked the camera work. The sound was inconsistent at best, I don't really understand why you used the onboard audio for some shots when you went through the trouble of ADRing others (I'm not actually any good at doing ADR, so I don't know what you should have done differently, but it was very apparent that the sound was recorded later). The story didnt really make much sense, what was the driver's motivation? Was he an idiot? Was he lazy? Was he trying to screw over the guy who wanted to give him money? Also, you completely shot your chances of anybody taking the movie seriously before you even started filming; NEVER NEVER NEVER write stories that you can't actually pull off if you want your film to have even a little bit of credibility, nobody is buying that your mom's sedan is a police car. There are so many interesting stories that can be told that are totally within your means.

Actually the sedan only needed a police light like the undercovers use, which they used to sale on eBay fairly cheap.

Yeah I could definitely use some help in the sound department! Keep in mind that this had to be made in less than two days total including editing and everything, I'm now evaluating it and considering making it into a bigger and more professional production in the future. The car shot at the end could of used a lot of work. It actually wasn't even supposed to be in there at all. There was supposed to be a foot chase and then the person on the bike would crash and get caught. But we couldn't get enough people together so we had to use my car instead which pretty much sucked lol but oh well we got it done at least. I wanted to put some digital lights on it but I didn't know how and ran out of time. Thanks for the critiques! I think if we choose to redo this as a professional film it could make a pretty good piece!

Still don't know why dude didn't show up. Obviously he's the sucky version of the Transporter. LOL. Bet he doesn't even know any martial arts or is really bad at it or simply runs.

It's great that you want to make something with higher production values and I definately see the potential there to make something worthwhile, but I really can't stress enough that you've already shot yourself in the foot by having teenagers play parts that you would at least need someone in their 30s for. Look at "Juno" or "Where the wild things are" movies about kids can be taken very seriously. If you have talent and want somebody to notice it, don't waste your time on something that everyone but friends and family are going to immediately write off.

Any more comments? Nathyn, you're right if I did this as a bigger film I would not use teens and would fix some of the other issues. Keep in mind this was done for a small two week film competition, not some long planned production ect.
