The Dreaded "Copyright Question"...

Hey,

I'm not sure how many of you are already aware of these resources (and I don't remember where I found out about them; maybe it was right here at DVXUser), but I just caught-on to the fact that there are now some simple ways to legally access and license many popular songs and oldies for a very fair fee for the local/wedding photographer or videographer. You cannot use the songs for broadcast without special permission; this is for the short-run/very low distribution video producer that wants to do things right. Finally! An easy way to do this:

Great resources.....but they have some serious restrictions for usage. You cannot just use them for your film. Look at the FAQs on the first one. Nothing there about films for theatrical release.

Actually there is farther down. Industrials and independent features need to contact them because prices vary by the project but start at about $300 for non "name" songs and around $10,000 for well known songs.

Yes, again, real films need a music budget and someone like a music superviser that can give attention to detail. I was thinking more about the frequent posts here from local producers working in the wedding business, that sort of thing, who in the past had no recourse for micro-licensing. Now you can pay $35 for a license for a project like that. That sounds fair to me, and I hope it will encourage more people to "go legit."

Thanks, Gregg!

I've added these to the "Legally-Licensed Music" sticky, which now has a section in the list for these wedding-videography-focused sites.
