The Devil Wears Prada - Music Video (QUICKTIME)

wow
you own videos for this genre man
kill it EVERY TIME!
you and dan dobi inspired me to start making music videos
just curious...
how many takes do you usually get? i was told to get around 30 and im sure the band is going to want to eat my face by the 10th take
any tips?

Hmmmm

Hmmmm

Wow, 30?! I've never heard that before, unless you mean like you have three different locations, same performance, 10 each. We only had 7 full run-throughs on our last music video. There were issues with time, how long the fire could last (a key element) with the supplies we had, etc. I wish we had 3 more, for safety and because at times we had to be creative with the editing, but more than 10 wouldn't have been useful at all, just excessive. Thirty would be... wow. I mean, on something super complicated maybe that would rock. But yeah, the band would basically start to fade after a while.

That video was intense. I don't much care for the style of hard rock where you can't even understand the lyrics because it's 75% screaming, but the video was really well shot and looked pretty killer. The location was fantastic.

HAHA - we shoot anywhere from 20-30+ takes of the band performance for a music video. here is our logic to back that up - you have the band for 1 full day and they are paying for a good video so why not milk the shoot and get all sorts of great angles. plus if you think about it you need A LEAST 2 shots of each member 1 standard speed and 1 slow motion. and then you want to get some great wide shots (5+) and then if something is really shinning through in their performance you want to get some great shots/angles to really showcase that. The band may start to fade, but they dont need to be in every shot - you may have solo shots of each performer focusing on just them. the only person who is usually hurting at the end is the drummer because he's usually in the back and needs to be in, well, almost every shot - haha.

now if you were to shoot film, obviously you'd have to take budget and amount of film stock into consideration - but usually if you're shooting film you have a decent budget to begin with.

but yes, we shoot ALOT of takes - and sometimes we wish we shot more or had more time

yea man! how crappy was that. and its not something you can really do anything about - like how often does a PA just crap out on you. it wasnt a fuse or anything just stopped working. and the rental house was closed by the time it happened, but we made do! the show must go on, eh?

so was all of that shot on an hvx200?

if so what is your rig like?

it really does look amazing.

can you do a crew breakdown? how big etc

also what was the budget if you don't mind sharing

Yeah we got as much coverage as we could for our last video but we just didn't have the time to do more run-throughs of the entire performance. We ended up having plenty, but I would have preferred a few more for sure. It just depends what you are doing, I guess, because I think sometimes I'd want more and sometimes less is ok.

The location there really is sweet. Good work man!

im going to try and do the most that i can get in being as how im only working with one camera and its not a paying job as im just getting my foot in the music video door, first gig that is

heres some info on the shoot if you care to check it out HERE

sorry to hijack your thread man
but its defiantly the best video ive seen recently so props again

This is one of the coolest videos I've seen in a really really long time. I've watched like 10 times,.. ha ha. The sub bass after the static-freak-out thing shook my house because I had it cranked running through my 5.1,.. it was neat.

This made me like music videos again,.. you guys kick ass.

Love the location, look, feel, story, music,.. everything gels very nicley.

!!!!!

Exactly. Where was this shot, that looks like an abandoned church. How did you go about shooting there?
Anyways, the story was great, memorable slo-mo of the drummer really caught my eye and great job in post. I can tell you have some talent in your crew.

Woow first of all amazing job on the video, it just shows how much I need to learn ,now some questions,
what was the format you shot this in? the slowmo only could be 960 by 720? camera settings? white balance?
The camera shakes and movement did you do that in post?
What was the budget for this?
I just finished a music video,by looking at your videos, I need tol learn a lot more,

yea it was shot in an abandoned church in an old run down town. we have a connection with the mayor of the town and they had access/keys to it, so we built in there for a few days shot in there for 2 days and thats basically the shoot. thanks!!
