Guys the oscars are rigged. didn't you hear that story a while back about some actress (FORGET HER NAME!!) had a like 18 second cameo in some film and was nominated for an oscar.

That was the Emmys and the actress is Ellen Burstyn, who can give you more in 14 seconds than a lot actors can in a lifetime.

Yeah that's right
Marty must have really done someone dirty...or maybe he's just not an ass kiss, but he's been robbed so many times its ridiculous.

John, imagine this in an alternate reality: Would you like the original Godfather or the remake done by a very famous director from the most influencial film industry in the world (Hong-Kong) ?

What I mean is that it certainly feels a bias, here. The Oscars are, of course, the Film awards that award american films- that's why there's "the best foreign film" category- But I just can't feel but a bit disappointed that the director of such excelent and significant movies to the history of cinema, like Taxi Driver and Goodfellas, and even the Aviator (which I consider one of his best films- a class in cinema in many aspects) would be awarded by a film he didn't personaly had high expectations with- just listen to his DGA prize taking speech.

Directing is directing, irregardless of any previous work we had to direct this movie and did it with incredible mastery. Someone from Hong Kong could very well direct a chinese version of the Aviator and direct it better.

What you talking about is screenplay.

The oscars are american film awards, they're broadcasted internationally because of america's weight as an international superpower when it comes to film, show me the asian spiderman or the indian pirates of the caribbean and I'll agree with you.

Besides that's like saying other countries teams should have a shot at the Superbowl just because it's broadcast in your country.

Marty didn't have high expectations because he's matured to the point where he doesn't need a statue to value the obvious hitmaking career he's had, he's been open about this in interviews.

Also he's talked about how he doesn't like all the Oscar lobbying that goes on, how he doesn't appreciate the politics behind the studios and what not and how he doesn't want to get all worked up about these things anymore.

He's been clear about all that, he didn't make the departed thinking it was crap and not having high expectations about it, he also didn't make it expecting the world to throw themselves at his feet.
He just wanted to make a good movie.

That's like this year Mark Wahlberg isn't in very much of the departed but he gives a dynamic performance. He was my favourite character throughout the whole movie!

If Spiderman and Pirates are what you define has Award worthy Good films- and I mean best picture wise- than I can't argue with you on that. However, If you want blockbuster type of movies, why not consider French blockbusters? Remember "The Fifth Element"? How about "Asterix"? You want another blockbuster not from America? How about " James Bond?" As for Asian blockbusters, I don't know if you've ever heard of " Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon", or "Kung-Fu Hustle". You want more blockbusters? How about Myiasaki's Animation movies? i'm sure no one could beat american films in VFX, so your Spiderman and Pirates would probably win without any international competition, but in the rest... it would be a run for your money.

Everywhere, good competition brings out better products. And why not foreign teams in superbowl, like in europe, where they have the " Champions League", in soccer? Or a special club competition for Basketball? I know the rest of the world would probably lose, but it would be a heck of a lot of fun!
