The death knell for real?

Yep I know, the hype is hilarious, in fact I suggest you all watch the movie Suicide Circle - not only is it more innovative and original than 99% of the indie emulative stuff we see on the scene! (see most dvx fests muhahaha ;) but its also all about hype and especially 'fads.'

Well marketing is all about SELLING fads. If they can convince you to bust your balls to buy the latest thang based on some irrelevant fact (such as the zombie feature making $500 budgeted indie worrying about a silver grade from Discovery HD) or having more mega pixels than what a cat's eyeball can see in a supermarket full of tuna... yes a cat. Then of course they will.

1080 is an HD standard that along with 720 lookds great in peoples televisions, and so still can SD! It actually CAN and it always could!!! Of course we'll be told we need 4k televisions with 3d viewings and probably electronic bum toys but lets face it... the more you shoot - the more you can smell that BS on the toy!

I mean thats putting it nicely!

Couldn't have said it better myself!

Hey guys,

thank you for your point of views. It reinforced my opinion that the price-quality ratio is still great. This "old lady" has just all the features for prof output.

Also thanks for the nice demo links.

Bottom line - re this thread - is that the 500 is an excellent camera for 90%+ of anything that needs doing.

A friend asked me - why, if I like my 500 and DVCPRO HD so much, would I consider replacing it with the 3100? In many previous posts I have criticized the 500 for it's weight, the fact that you can't see over it to the right when it's on your shoulder, and the cursed viewfinder. Those are the reasons, and not DVCPRO HD, that I would consider shelling out 20 grand for a new camera that seems (I haven't actually seen one yet) improved. The 500 may, hopefully, mark the end of the tape-based BetaSP brick and the low rez B&W CRT viewfinder.

Keep in mind that the 3100 is a 1080-only camera. No 720p, and no variable frame rates. So not entirely a directly comparable replacement, although unquestionably the 3100 would be a lot sharper.

That's why I haven'r made a deposit.... I like 720 and I like slo-mo, occasionally - I might just wait, skip a codec or two, and see what happens... Or get an AF100 to play with, but keep the 500 - I have not had a single negative comment about the images from the 500 (or 200) from clients , PBS or cable acquisitions people. Just the opposite. In fact I just had an email today from one who wanted to know what camera I used because she wanted to recommend it to another producer.
