The Dark Knight

I think they probably could have trimmed 10 or 15 minutes off it. Even though the 2 1/2 hours breezed by, the 3rd act seemed a bit rushed because the 1st act was so long. Maybe could have skip the trip overseas; put it on the DVD release. That would be the only criticism and it was barely an issue.
...
One question for everybody (spoiler alert) did you guys also think the triggers were wired to blow up the boats that the people were actually on? Both the wife and I were thinking that but they never reveal the answer.

The trip overseas to capture Lau was kept pretty brief, and the aerials were spectacular in IMAX. Albeit everything in IMAX was cool. I agree that at times, things seemed a bit rushed or cramped together, and I'm sure there's still at least another half hour of footage that could have been kept in, but they obviously managed to do well without.

As for the boats, I thought all three detonators were wired the same way. If either boat activated the detonators to blow up the other boat, it would have blown both of them up, then there was the detonator the Joker himself had, which looked identical to the other two detanators, and he appeared ready to destroy both boats.
That scene was pretty gripping btw, very twisty, never knew where it was going to go.

...but the only thing that bothered me a bit was the editing. Too me, it felt like they took a 3-1/2 hour movie and cut it down. A lot of the scenes kind of ended abruptly for me. I hope we get a long-ass director's cut when the DVD comes out.

I totally agree. The pacing and editing clashed at times. But I still found it acceptable given the overall results.
Paitiently awaiting Dark Knight REDUX. :)

Loved the movie but came back to this thread to express my disdain for the average looking girlfriend that not just one, but TWO incredible men can't get over. When Bruce says... what he says (no spoiler I guess)... I can't believe it. Why would a super-cool, super-good looking BILLIONAIRE want to spend the rest of his life with ugly betty? Not buying it.
It seems some of you are forgetting the deep history Rachel Dawes and Bruce Wayne have together. Their relationship is rooted back before the loss of his parents, and is essentially a "playground love" that never ended. She really knew him, and he really knew her. That was all that mattered for them. I guess for other people, that stuff has no relevance for who they want to spend the rest of their life with.

Also... the batman voice was pushed to 12 on a scale of 1-10... I wish they'd throttled that back a bit... in our favorite local theater, with sound so good it feels like headphones... his growling voice sounded overly processed.
No doubt, I wanted to throw ricola cough drops at the screen. :)

My picks for a next Joker (if he is featured in the next film): Daniel Day-Lewis, Giovanni Ribisi, Clive Owen, Tim Roth, Mark Wahlberg (yeah, he was terrible in The Happening, but great in Boogie Nights and The Departed), Gael Garcia Bernal, Casey Affleck, Adrien Brody (who apparently wanted the part before Ledger was cast), and hell, maybe even Jake Gyllenhaal (and that's not a cheap Brokeback Mountain joke). I don't know if most of them would be the absolute right choice, but I think they're some of the best actors working today.
I think we get ahead of ourselves when taking the liberty of choosing another Joker.
They will likely establish a new set of villains, and possibly some allies before we're reintroduced to the Joker again.
That being said, those are all very strong choices you've listed, undeniably great actors in their own right, but it's unknown if they'll be required to echo Ledger's performance/appearance. Not to put Ledger on a pedistal above those actors, but it's obvious that Ledger has put a very distinct touch on the character, so even if the actors could technically do it, they still may not want to because these actors would most likely need to take the character in a different direction and I think it's too soon to take that kind of risk.

I think Jeremy Sisto would make a great joker as well.
I can't dispute Sisto's ability to flip the switch.
But he may be better suited to fill a role as an ally to Batman rather than a villain.

IMO, if the Joker had to be replaced in the third installment, then James Franco might be worth a look.
[a recent NYT screen test of him]
While I find it unlikely they'll recast anyone so soon, I think Franco would do a great job at ressurecting and restablizing the Joker. His appearance would be nearly identical, and you can tell he can take a very similar tone with his voice. Not to mention the grimmace he could do.
With all that said, no matter who gets cast, Ledger's performance will most likely stand the test of time and will be long considered the best of them all.

Totally off-topic, but on-topic at the same time. If you have HD OnDemand through providers like Time Warner, go check out the 13 minute Dark Night sneak / BTS promo reel that they're running right now.

At one point, about eleven minutes in, you get to see a quick shot of the Ultimate Arm (process car system) not make it out the back end of the shot. You can clearly see that they rammed the IMAX camera into the side of a stunt vehicle. I rewatched it a half-dozen times.

Awesome.

OK, I have to say--even in the experience of seeing the film for the first time, the cell phone thing exceeded my suspension-of-disbelief. It's one thing to have one custom-built cell phone that serves as a "sonar" mapping device, as Lucius did in Hong Kong, but it's quite another to have every cell phone in a major metropolitan area, on every different carrier, all serve the same function without any hardware modification. That's one hell of an involuntary firmware upgrade, right there... :)

yeah. Again, I need to see the film another time or two before I fully know how I feel about it but I don't quite understand all of the comments referring to the genius of this film with respect to being so "realistic". How can that be? The cell phone, the hospital blow up scene, the action sequences, etc. I mean, really? Who else besides me is not seeing the supposed realism?

Viewership in my opinion speaks for the film as a film. If no one watches it, then how good is it really?

The previous record holder for biggest opening weekend was SPIDERMAN 3!!! Did you SEE that? Worst movie ever.

And I guess RICE is the greatest, best tasting food on Earth, since more people eat it than anything else?

Total box office for Dark City's ENTIRE U.S. run was $14.7M.

American Beauty made less than $1M opening weekend, less than $7.5M total for first two weeks. It didnt make consistantly make money until after the post-Oscar rerelease.

Fight Club made $37M for it's entire U.S. run - HALF of it's budget.

I could go on, but I think the point is made.
