The D600 Really is Out (and Shipping)!

Both of my local camera stores told me this afternoon that they will have the D600 in stock tomorrow afternoon. This includes both a big nation-wide chain store ( Best Buy ), as well as a family owned local chain of 3 small specialty stores.

I'll be picking mine up tomorrow, at the small local store.

Super weird. Best Buy says they can't sell them til the 23rd, but there are four sitting there.

I was going to grab one to try out, for old times sake. Wasn't impressed with the promo video, but it's the only new camera available right now and I'm itching to play with a new toy.

I like nikon colors, always have. And I actually thought about switching to nikon, but there's one flaw that keeps me from doing so. Not being able to change aperature without going out of live view mode. Now this is what I'm hearing, so don't take it as gospel. Thats something that would cause me to huck my cam into a river when your three shots behind schedule.

Might change the title to "D600 Shipping" or "On Shelves" or similar for clarity.

I thought this was just a repeat threda until I opened it. Thanks for the info!

Michael

Rented mine today at Lens Rentals. Got it coming Monday with a Neiss-Zeiss~ :) ...also LR is giving away a MBP on their Fb promo for those interested in those sorts of things. I have no real interest in buying one, but trying can be fun~

Lance, I see you have a Panasonic GH2 and you will be getting the Nikon 600. I am looking at the Panasonic GH3 and the Nikon 600. Just curious to why you choose the Nikon 600. I hope someone can compare the 2 cameras, or maybe they did. The GH3 would be a little better on the wallet.
Do you know how long both cameras can record video. The video aspect would be number one, then photo quality. And then using different make lenses.

It is a limitation of the D600, like it is with the D7000 (but not D800).

The time spent with this extra step is literally 1 second. I agree that it's an unnecessary extra step, but I really find it painless. Your thumb flicks the liveview switch, your forefinger changes aperture, then flick the liveview switch once more. Of course you can't change aperture while recording and that may be an issue for some too.

REALLY?

Yes, definitely an issue. I so often do a follow where I go from indoors to out, room to room, pan toward a window and away, etc.

How does one manage? Variable ND I guess. That is really weird! Though I suppose the D7000 was not a big video camera.

Practically, does this change your camera style? I found all kinds of new uses for auto focus in video, face tracking servo focus, and the touch screen focus recently. It is like a "dance" you learn to make a camera hit the right parameters (like "focus & recompose" with center spot only, etc.)

Hmmmm ....

I'm sure it is not a deal breaker for most. Just - surprised.

Best,
Michael

OK, I misunderstood then. Only electronic aperture is locked down? (Last Nikon I used was 1983.) ;>}

Thanks!

Indeed: no silly electronics can prevent me from turning the (declicked) aperture ring on my vintage primes

There are a ton of primes and some zoom like the 28-70 Nikon and Tokina as standard zoom range. What is good with Nikon is that you can have a ton of lens option spanning decades that will work at the focal length they were designed for. You can now also have the cine lens from Samyang if need be. So it is a little annoying but you have ton of solution for it.

Yeah, I need to quit posting when I am up until 4 am with insomnia. :)

That is not the worst thing I have done on Ambien. But at least I have never driven without waking up, like some people have!

Cheers! Michael

So weird. Best Buy still won't sell til 23rd and Samys doesn't have any, but I found one place that got them yesterday and is selling them now.

The heck is up with that?

I'm tempted...

Well, my actions have been affected because I have been shooting Nikon for several years now. I currently have a D90. However, I've already invested in a couple of great FX lenses, with the goal in mind of eventually upgrading from DX to FX. Plus I also have a wonderful Nikon SB-900 flash. So I've put a fair amount of money into Nikon equipment.

So I am now going to sell my D90 and both of my DX lenses for it, and then buy one more FX lens. That will then complete my upgrade to FX.

I've only had the GH2 a short while. And have not invested heavily in lenses for it.

Best case scenario: I will be satisfied with the D600 video, and will decide to be a 100% Nikon DSLR shooter for both still photos and video.

Worse case scenario: If I'm not happy with its video, then I will probably keep the camera just for still photography, and then consider upgrading my GH2 to the GH3.

It would be nice to have just one camera system for both stills and video. Perhaps the GH3 can be that camera, and I have made a mistake. Only time will tell.

I've got a nanoflash, ninja, and gemini I could test with. The only issue is a) restocking fee if I don't like it and b) having my card charged if the elusive magic cam sudden to starts shipping. Lol.

I think aliasing is going to be a problem with the 60p 720p, besides the days of suffering 720p 60p are over. The A99 makes more sense: 1080p 60p, same sensor, and HDMI 422 out for another $700. The big question is whether you can dial in a prolost profile. The A99 can't take as many lenses but there's still a lot of lens options. And then there's the GH3 to consider, lower DR but plenty resolution.

I had a look at some 3200 and 6400 ISO jpegs at imaging resource, the MKIII still has the edge in high ISO noise reduction and sharpness (talking stills here but NR is applied in video mode)

I've seen more moire in vimeo downloads than I can tolerate, I'm hoping the A99 has a more video friendly OLPF or has a better downscaling/pixel binning process than Nikon.
