"the critical view" - The Braves and the AF100

Hey, nice writeup! Glad to see Panasonic giving some press to our DVXusers, and I can echo just about everything you said about the AF100. Congrats on the Braves projects!

That reel looks great! Nice going, and those interview setups look fantastic - great depth, everything. One error in the write up; they said you recorded only on cards but isn't that a Sound Devices Pix hangin' off there in that first picture? ;)

yes, pix 240

Yeah I now own because of this job a Pix240, but the footage you see in my reel is straight from the SDHC card. The Pix was in DNXHD and I didn't want to go through the whole transcode when I am an FCP guy.

Thanks guys!

BTW.. sorry if that Pix comment came off as di*kish. I think it's great to see guys working and doing great stuff with the AF100. I agree that the longer I have it the more I like it.

of course we should meet up grove chuck
scotty's landing is only like 5 min from the house. let me know when you are in the area. As far as the bg lights, there were a few. a 650 through a cookie on the back 3 jerseys, a 300 on a dimmer on the first jersey on the left, and i believe a few peppers creating the shine of the grating on the lockers, 1 for each side, as well as a 2 bank, 2 foot kino lighting up the inside of the locker on the bottom right of the frame. I had a great gaffer named Troy Paddock from Kentucky (prime lighting and grip) helping me out, and we worked together to achieve the look.

@robbin, I made my own scene file. I had to shoot in 720p60 because that is the native system the braves edit in. My detail is always -4, vdetail -2, coring and everything 0 master ped -4 drs1 skin detail off bpress gama, matrix norm 2, knee mid

no worries hscully, not offended in the least, the Pix240 stuff I'm sure was more grade worthy, but to me, if its well lit, the SDHC card holds its own. Its when you are facing extreme contrast that the card deteriorates with noise in the shadows, or clips in the highlights, thats why i don't shoot over exposed! my zebras are always set to 100.

bgunda, I read your story and saw your beautiful footage from your movie in India. Is that link above correct?

Thanks, Scott. I didn't want to nitpick around that great post. We get plenty of that ;) There is so much positive news about the AF100 lately - you guys, Zak finishing up his feature, Raid: Redemption at the multiplex, all sorts of great stuff coming out shot on AF100s and looking great.

Yep, I get great results when I expose well. That's the key. I like BPress for the blacks. I've also been getting great results with HDNorm. It is very hearty, I just like it, especially how it grades.

LOL... that was the wrong embedded link. I have corrected it. The film is shaping up to be a real international contender. I'll keep you guys posted.

i for one see a huge plus using external recording, especially on fast movement and underexposed scenes. If you film someone moving and panning along you get some parts of the body cut of in the internal recording while on the external you see things as it should be. Go frame by frame in your editing program and you see what i mean.

This one of the most beautiful footage that I saw from a AF 100. Of course the light in India also helps a lot to create this atmosphere...but it is always the craft of the cinematographer...This is perhaps one of the reasons that I purchase a AF 101 by my self. Beside a good backup from Jan Crittenden(Panasonic) and Barry Green, 3 guarantee and this forum with very involved people.

Despite AF 100 is the "oldest" big sensor camera (a wunderfull creation of thre Panasonic) and the two newer cameras, the Canon C300, Sony FS700, I will test them all...The cropfactor 2, is both advantage and disadvantage for me. The only problem could be the sensitivity...

In a couple of months I have to go over to shoot on HD and stop shooting with the camera I own who I still really love, my Ikegami HLV79 W DVCPRO 50, who served me well since 1998 without any problem!!!

I let you know which camera I eventualy will purchage... The most important is to invest in lenses...
