The Collective

I just picked up this video, it's really amazing. They used alot of Bolex h-16 16mm camera's to shoot it, and also alot of DVX footage. It really has some amazing cinematography and innovative filming techniques (300 + foot zip line's, cranes, etc...) I really recommend it to anyone, even if you don't ride mountain bikes...

Re: The Collective

all action in these actionflicks is done in 16mm (or 99%). and you should not forget the budgets they have (6-digit numbers), so building a crane every now and then is easily covered ;-)

but the riders.....yes, if snoboard, mtb or ski...they rock and risk their lives to get into the film....

Re: The Collective

There is a company called "Freeride Entertainment" that is beginning to shoot with 35mm and High Def, as well as fast frame rate high def. Really amazing stuff. I just really like the camera work in this video.

Re: The Collective

Amazing film yes. I wasn't too impressed with the DVX shots though. They strobed...blown out highlights...not a very good DOF. This is comparing to the rest of the film, shot in 16mm- which is what the guys are used to shooting, so not a totally fair comparison. The cable cam shots were unreal though, a must buy if you're into this kind of stuff!

Freeride Entertainment has to much of a rock star attitude for me to enjoy their films...My favorite is still Radical Films with the kranked series :)

Re: The Collective

I deffinetly agree about the rock star feel of Freeride Ent. In fact, I just recently finished up filming a bike video entitled "Broke". It was almost entirely shot with a DVX, mainly including riders from the Portland Oregon area. It was a really big accomplishment for me, since I have basically no money and I'm not even out of high school. LOL. Anywhoo, it premiered at a local theatre (on the big screen), and will also do so in Southern Oregon. I was super stoked, and am currently gearing up to do another video, this time with a budget, and a roster of pro riders (Donahue, Quarless, Blackie, Tribus, Jason Smith, Joe Prisel). I hope to work closely with Deity Components, and Stump 503 ( www.deitycomponents.com , www.stump503.com ), anyhow, I should try and get a trailer for Broke up here.....

Re: The Collective

some of those shots looks tight!! I can't even walk straight let alone ride a bike, especially like those crazy dudes.

That's funny, I'm in the exact same situation! Just finished a film with no budget, on borrowed cameras. I hope to pick up a DVX with some kind of homemade mini 35 adapter for the next one.

Do you have a teaser? I'd definately like to see some DVX footage of biking.

If you're interested in checking out mine.... http://www.cleancutfilms.ca

Re: The Collective

Yea, I checked out your teaser, thats way cool man! good job. Your video probly turned out better than mine, this was my first real attempt at putting a video together, and the thing was that it wasn't my top priority, I had alot of other things goin on and so it was hard to commit fully to this vid. But none the less, it turned out fairly decent, I will work on getting a teaser made for Broke, or if you want I may be able to send you the full version at no cost. I need to get music rights.

Re: The Collective

lol, same here....Still in high school..first attempt. not really top priority but hey it's a start! I'd love to see your film, we should trade copies or something :)

Re: The Collective

Yea, that would be cool, I gotta burn a whole bunch of copies of my vid, alot of people want them. So when I get that done I'll let you know and I will fire one your way. The teaser for your video looks pretty rad, looks like you had alot of good riders and locations, the whole concept of a local, down to earth video is what's needed nowadays too, to get away from the million $ + budgets of freeride entertainment, and all the rockstar hype associated with alot of the top pro's. It's good to see other people my age doin the video thing. I saved up for a long time for my DVX, it was an awsome investment, I used to use camera's from my school (sony PD-150's, PD-100A's) and they dont even compare to the DVX. My next purchase, hopefully by spring, will be a Firestore portable hard disk recorder. What do you use to edit on?
