SHORT: The Cold Dark - Post apocalyptic shortfilm -

We shot this one in 2017. Lots of cold, dark and wet! And some monsters too.

I really tried to do some more character oriented stuff and a plot that had a beginning, middle and end. Learned a **** ton (and that's what making shorts is mostly for). Shot this with a variety of different cameras, main bulk (50%) with the Blackmagic Ursa, then the 5d mark III and some sony rx10 ii stuff in there too. If you have any questions, shoot away!

Did some film festivals with this one. It works best in a theatre setting as you can't escape that easily ;)

I always enjoy your films. Your action scenes are always top notch! Some of the best I have seen on the indie scene for sure (after so many years of doing this, I have to imagine that you're getting calls from bigger productions to help them with their fight scenes). I appreciate that you gave this one more of a story. I thought your actress did a great job. I kind of wish that the guy with the gravelly voice didn't attack her when she confessed because he seemed like he might have had more complex motivations. I thought that they might reach an understanding (before a creature got him, of course). But anyway, fantastic work as always.

A couple of technical questions for you. How many days did it take to shoot this? What was your crew size? Was it real rain or did you have to run a rain line? You matched the cameras really well. For what did you use the 5Diii and RX10ii?

Hey thanks a bunch! 2 main days (with our main DoP Esa Jussila). Then 1 more day for the flashback scene (and we also reshot the cabin ending with a different monster). Then 1 evening for the dad stuff. After this I think I still took some extrashots (all the walking in the snow stuff etc) later. The rain was real. The cold was real. Great that you enjoyed it! I had an idea where those two characters are both kinda probing each other. The woman is trying to plead because she figures out that it's a good move to plead to the easier going guy as he could defang the other one but the dude realizes it's just an act. But that was really hard to make work properly. Luckily it works even if that doesn't come out.

5d III was used by myself (this was my first time working with another DoP so I still had the desire to operate a camera myself so the 5dIII raw was my choice). You can see it here and there. A7sII is in some shots at the end (out of the cabin).

I really enjoyed it. It is shot really well and told a great story. It always impresses me how much great content is out there outside the main stream. One good side effect of watching this was the You Tube algo then threw up a bunch of other independent short films :) Keep them comming!
