The Canon XF100 or the Panasonic HPX170

I hope this is the right forum for this question.

I'm looking to spend $2,500 on a camcorder for run and gun doc, event, and potentially broadcast work. So far, from what I have researched, the Canon XF100 and the Panasonic HPX170 seem to be the best bet for my budget, especially since they meet minimum broadcast standards, unlike most prosumer camcorders in this price range.

So, I would appreciate if I could get some recommendations between these two cameras (or even other camcorders that perhaps I haven't considered) since I am trying to choose between the two (or something that meets my requirements, which wouldn't include a DSLR).

I admit that I prefer the video aesthetic of the HPX170 over the XF100, but maybe that's just me. I just have a soft spot for the Panasonic "look."

Thanks!

The HPX has a great feature set, maybe the best or near best of any handycam. The only knock on it at this point would be the never ending focus ring and the IQ which has been eclipsed by the CMOS cams. But there are still some advantages to the CCD imager and the cam can still produce some nice images. The P2 recording medium, though still expensive, is the gold standard for reliability and for doco work can be wrangled in the field without a CPU present; plug in a powered drive into the cam and upload. The cam isn't fussy at all which is an advantage for run n gun.

Can't speak for the canon
