"The C-47 gets upgraded"

Recently we paid $20+ for a small bag of C-47s at Milk Studios/NY. Can only imagine what they'll charge for these black versions.

$20 for 40 clips. Considering that standard clothespins have sufficed for decades, and can be purchased for +/- $5 per 100... it's a great idea, just a little specialized. The $15 I save by going to Walgreen's to get my C-47s can be spent on gaff tape.

Or, a can of matte black spray paint is also around $5, so 100 pegs plus a DIY matte finish is still far less expensive.

I completely dig that it's possible to improve on the design of the venerable clothespin; after all, it wasn't exactly invented with our specific needs in mind. But the advantages they have over any more specialized tool are that they're dirt cheap (so you don't have to feel guilty about using a lot of them, leaving some behind, or modifying one for an impromptu purpose on set), and they're available in every drugstore and *-Mart in the civilized world if you need them in a pinch. The best tool for the job is often the one you already have with you, and it's easy and virtually free to stash plenty of C-47s in the nooks and crannies of a lighting kit.

I don't think I'll go out of my way to order any of these, but I'd use 'em if someone wanted to give me a bag.

I thought everyone reversed their clothespins and painted them black ALREADY.

Are they for sale at the store next to the Scotch Tape Boutique?

Now there you go. Everybody is raggin on these, and I was going to give each of you one for Christmas this year. :kali:

I guess it's back to the trick line gifts instead.

You kids are harsh. And, well, cheap.

It's called building the better mousetrap. If they charged a small fortune and called them hipster artisanal steampunk clamps, then I'd be all set to criticize. But they have in fact improved the consumer product in a functional way and done so at a reasonable price. What's not to like?

Do you know that black wrap was invented because some guy was walking by a studio and say a grip spray painting some aluminum foil? Black wrap is a highly effective product and it is certainly worth it to me to pay the premium for it over the DIY solution.

I think the BulletX product is a good one and I'd happily pick up a bag. Plenty of crews don't pay for their own expendables, simply placing an order and having Production pick up the tab for the job. You wrap it into the cost.

I just use cheap 1" metal spring clamps instead of C-47s, they have vastly more grip, they're smaller and they don't fall apart.

The product video was kinda ludicrous, but they do seem like a superior open to the old clothes peg, so I'm okay with it.

I used those metal clamps a few times....but putting gels on barn doors meant they got HOT!!! ...need the wood ones.
Although I am almost completely rid of hot lights now, so maybe I'll re-visit. Yeah, they grip a lot tighter.

THAT VIDEO! HAhahahah! They were taking it SoooOOOooo seriously I almost would feel like a doofus buying into them now... If only they just just said: "Yeah...it's a souped up clothespin...we know...but they really are BETTER."
I woulda felt better about it all.

Yeah, yeah, yeah....I know, I know....you're right.

Thanks dad.... :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

I probably WILL get a bag of 'em....

Send me half a bag so I don't have to spend any money them! lol

In all honesty though, I do see how they can be helpful. I myself have run into having to use something else because a C47 was just a little too small to clamp around what I needed...

I'm going to hold off purchasing for now. I understand there will be future C-47's available made from highly exotic woods, once they finish clearcutting that nasty old rainforest that keeps getting in the way. :Drogar-Shock(DBG):

Never mind the exotic wood or killing the rainforest, I'm holding out for the carbon fiber version with titanium springs.
