The Bye Bye Man

Overall, a waste of time, IMHO. It was actually competently made - not amazingly so, but still competently made. It's just that the idea was so poor, you found yourself wishing you weren't stuck watching this. The urge to walk out never leaves you and starts pretty much after the intro. It's a re-hash of stuff we've all seen thousands of times before in horror, but without any new ideas or even a wrinkle of innovation. Actually it's an interesting contrast to It Follows. Now, I liked It Follows as an idea, and enjoyed the movie, but it was very poorly made from a technical point of view - really badly done. Meanwhile, like I said, The Bye Bye Man was competently done, just a ridiculously tired and unexciting collection of ideas and effects. I'd watch It Follows again, despite the clumsy filmmaking, but wouldn't dream of re-watching The Bye Bye Man, even though it was OK technically. YMMV.

Just my opinion, and I am almost 53 years old.....for context.

I really liked this film. To me, what is called "horror" is actually a gore film today. Somebody is going to lose their head, or their arms, or their head and arms......and maybe a leg earlier. Blood goes everywhere.....and this is called "horror."

What I liked about Bye Bye Man is that it was not a gore movie, it was horror like we used to watch in the 1970's. The movie was about the story, not the practical gore effects, and we've seen them all many times. There was an element of "just what the heck is going on." There were some predictable moments, but there were also a few things that really caught me off balance towards the end. There was also some suspense. You knew something was going to happen.....but it didn't when you were expecting it.

I am sure people who grew up on all the Saw movies, and others like it, did not like this film. People were not always being ripped apart and blood up to your knees. I appreciate having a story told to me visually.

I can agree with most of this. Slasher films aren't horror. On the other side of that coin, some excellent horror films were bloody. Legend of Hell House is one of my favorites, and House on Haunted Hill... the newer one.
