The buzzards are a circlin' Final Draft Ned...

What "spike"? You mean this blog littered with poor grammar and useless information that no one knows about? I think the hit counter on that blog is neck and neck with my grandmother's knitting blog.

Ciao.

I know what celtx is. Brian likes to take shots at FD because he's still got something to prove. He's not the type of fellow to share his thoughts and move on, especially when everyone else disagrees. He'd rather come back with sticks and stones to fight tanks.

Brian, you know I'm kidding, right :)

No, the blog announces the arrival of Celtx 1.0. One point freakin' oh.

To quote the immortal Steely Dan, "it's Over now Drink your big black cow And get out of here ...

I use Celtx, it's the freakin' shi*! And it doesn't matter if no one uses it, you can export to PDF directly from the program. I agree with Brian, this is great, and if you really think no one cares I am sorry to inform you you are wrong:

1 Million Downloads - 340 Thousand Messages - 250 Thousand Users - 50 Thousand Forum Posts - 2 Thousand Bugs Squashed - 18 Version Releases - 8 Team Celtx - 4 Years in the Making - 2 Babies Born - One Celtx 1.0

I am pumped for this!

EJ asked a valid question. Can you convert to FD? If a producer buys your script they are going to give you one rewrite and then hire another writer to work it...and they will want it in FD. Talk to the Celtx programmers and see if they can convert...if not then I'm sure they can program it. It's a step that will be required so get them working on it. Keep writing.

I just don't see why they wouldn't be happy with a PDF file. I mean, FD is one program, as is Celtx as is any other writing software, there is no "industry standard" so to speak, therefore a universal format should be accepted, and that would be PDF.

PDF is intended for things that aren't gonna be massively edited later on. Sure, typos can be corrected later on and stuff, but Acrobat is not a word processor. Its best when you want to send a file to someone else who does not have your software to read/print, or when you want to preserve formatting between two programs, or when you want to make a file that can be easily downloaded online and viewed by alot of people. Because you cant easily take a PDF file and parse it in another piece of software and then edit it like it was a native file. Thats why OpenOffice lets you save stuff in the native format, PDF, M$ Office, WordPerfect, ASCII text, RTF, etc, etc.

In order for any software to be taken seriously, it should be able to save files in the native format of its major competitors' software packages. That would include Movie Magic, Final Draft and whatever other major packages exist out there, if any.

I understand that. Does FD save in Celtx form, though? If not, how can you expect Celtx users to support FD users but not the other way around?

Because no one that matters uses Celtx. Not being mean, just saying that there would be no point in FD or movie magic converting to Celtx because there would be no point.

The industry uses Movie Magic and Final Draft, if Celtx wants to compete they have to meet us where we are.

That said, it is a nice little program. Has a bit further to go, however.

Celtx is not a relevant program in the real industry, maybe in the student filmmaker world it is, I don't know. But in this town, FD and MM are the standard used by every professional screenwriter I know, and I know a lot of them. I also write a lot on assignment and collaborate with producers via FD, which everyone has. If I used Celtx, there would be no compatibility, not to mention I wouldn't tell a producer I use a low-quality free online program no one's ever heard of.

May sound arrogant, but this topic is tired and needs to go away now.

It just seems to me that it shouldn't matter what the hell program someone wants to use, whether it be FD, MM, Celtx or freaking paper and pen. What should matter, however, is the quality of the writing, the story and the ability to stick to format.

It is the talent that makes the difference, not the medium used to illustrate it.

Thread done.

Who said it was all about the program and not the writing? Slow down, I was just pointing out what the industry standard is in screenwriting software.

:) Good luck!

HAHAHAHA, that was awesome!!

Who cares about this program? I've never even heard of it. That's like saying that Sony Vegas is a real editing system. It isn't. Nobody cares about it, nobody uses it, except amateurs. Heck most pros don't even use Premiere and that's a great program, actually, but it's really between Final Cut and Avid for pro use. With screenplays, Final Draft is the deal. If you don't use Final Draft people laugh at you, and your screenplays aren't compatible with what any pro uses. Our screenwriting teacher said she sometimes used one of the other programs but eventually ditched it because it wasn't compatible with what ever other pro was using. Sorry but face the reality, PROS use Final Draft. We all own it.

I didn't say I don't use FD, I just said it doesn't matter what program you use but how you use it. That's my point. Hell, I could write a whole feature on a rock and it wouldn't make me any less of a "pro" then the next guy, nor would it take away from my talent. I think we are done with this now.

I used to pay for FD. Then celtx came about - so I quit paying. If someone ever wanted to buy my script and only used FD then I would buy it and import the txt file.

I used to think it was 6 of one half a dozen of the other when it came to FD and MM.

But MM's new outlining tools are amazing and completely customizable and keep me away from FD, which is fine, and Celtx, which I guess is fine, though someone just sent me a Celtx script with tons of widows ... which should be impossible in any screenwriting software.

Celtx has some notes as does FD, but nowhere near as advanced as the new MM outlining tools.

That said, if you like using Celtx, no reason to buy either FD or MM, until/unless you find yourself in a situation where you are colaborating on something with someone who uses FD or MM. I guess I can imagine a situation where you suddenly need to send it to someone in a half an hour as an FD file and you have to hurry and download FD and have no time to check that all the formatting cut and paste correctly from Celtx, etc. but that's pretty unlikely.
