the brevis 35 - what do i really need

so im thinking about getting a brevis 35
the flip which comes with the case and i know i'll also need rails so about 1850 or so

a couple questions
- what is the real practical difference between the 45 cm and 60 cm rods? why pay extra for the 60 in terms of practical usage

- brevis doesn't seem to come with its own follow focus so i guess i'll have to go with redrock or another solution there

- are any of the brevis 'accessories' necessary in any way other than the rods / rails? i mean, i know i don't need brevis-brand diffusers and so on - i just don't want to buy a bunch of stuff and realize i forgot to order something fairly essential to get up and running

thank ya

You will want the long rails if you want to use long lenses. I use a 200mm lens occasionally and the 60cm rails just accommodate it with the matt box and hvx brevis etc. Of course, if you have a smaller camera, you'll need shorter rails.

In short order you'll be able to purchase the Brevis with our own folow focus (long story there) but right now we do have everything else that typically goes with a 35mm adapter rig, includinging focus gears, the Proteus rails system, and matteboxes. In two weeks or so our large waterproof cases (similar to Pelican) with travel wheels and retractable tow handle will be here. They are designed to accomodate our 60mm Proteus rails, MP.1 flip, and HVX/EX1 sized camera fully rigged. The crew for Undertow tested out the prototype box for 3 weeks and loved it.

Cheers,
Dennis.

That's awesome I thought you guys had forgot about the cases. Will these be cheaper than pelicans?

by hvx/ex1 sized camera, i am assuming that also means a canon xha1?

I'd assume so, unless they've done something really bizarre with the design, the xha1 should be able to fit.

if i'm not getting a follow focus, there's no reason i'd need the follow focus gears, right? in fact, aren't they kind of useless without a follow focus?

P, 35mm lenses are not geared, meaning regardless of the FF in use, you need some type of gearing. Our gears are annodized aluminum, 100mm and provide 360 degrees of smooth movement at standard film pitch (.8 or 32tpi) They've been popular as unlike plastic zip gears, the outer diameter stays constant ensuring accurate gear meshing. We've got a Chroziel FF here (about 3 times the cost of our unit) which of course still needs our gears and is buttery smooth with them.

With regard to the cases, we didn't forget them...but it takes time to get them made! They will be at $210 or so with seven easy-release latches, 3 layers of pick/pluck foam and are watertight. They are a tad bit too long for carry-on in order to accomodate our 60cm rails, however we're bringing in shorter versions too. They'll hold a fully rigged EX1 on our 60cm Proteus system, or an HPX500 with 17x lens etc. We'll have a blurb about them with pics once they're up in our catalog.

The crew shooting "Undertow" just pulling the fully rigged HVX200 out of the case, attached the Marshal monitor and started shooting.

I am really glad you made those cases Dennis, I will certainly get one in the future, it is so convenient to have a full rigged camera ready for a shoot. Saves lots of time even though it is fairly easy to put together then Brevis w/ rails etc. Does it have space in there for the matt box as well for storage? Right now my Cinevate matt box is in a custom case but it would be nice to have something that was designed for it.
