GH4 The big "What settings do you like best when shooting the GH4" thread

Hi Guys,

Coming from a Nikon D600 background, makes the GH4 a rather complex but awesome video machine.
Tough, because of all the options you have when setting up the GH4, it's becoming quite difficult for me to know what really the best settings are.
From shooting with a cinelike V profile with a lot of the settings to -5 and some idynamics adjustments and stuff (James Miller) to a custom natural profile.
I've come a cross quite a few setting profiles.

I think it would be awesome to get a collection from all the settings you guys like to use best. With maybe some example footage to go with the settings.
This way there is a central place to go to for reference in setting up the GH4.

I'm settling on Cinelike D with sharpness at -2 and NR at -5. Contrast I vary from 0 to -5 depending on the shot. I leave highlight and shadow at 0. Gives me the least noisy image and it grades well. Some are lowering saturation to -5 but I'm not liking how it grades that way, not enough color detail seems to be captured.

Here's my settings -

cineV, 16-235, all zero's.

This one was with master pedestal at +10 which blew the highlights.

This was a test of some 96fps slowmo stuff. The last two clips are 1080-60p conformed to 24p

All that has been added in post is some s shape to the color curves and some sharpening on the slowmo clips. It's the easiest workflow I've ever had and the results speak for themselves.

Cheers,
Pete

I am doing a slightly different approach. I feel like the codec at 4K breaks down rather quickly when trying to grade.
I am going for ¾'s of the way there.
I go with Natural, +1 on contrast, -5 on sharpness and Pedestal -3.
This can all change depending on the situation. But more I. The vain of old school video, I try to get as close as possible. If I wanna have full control for post I use my Epic.

Those are close to to the settings I use. I see a lot of people raising the master pedestal to high, or bringing down the highlights so much that skin tones flatten out with no contrast at all. (My own tests confirmed the same thing.) It's horrible, and unrealistic. I think a slight modification to zero mod of high/shadow is what makes the most sense.

We need a proper LOG out from Panasonic, which I read may be coming. In the meantime, Cine D with some careful exposure in camera is great. It's not log, but it's flat enough. Neutral turned down works ok too, but since Filmconvert has a CineD preset, I use that.

I recently did an A-B comparing to my C100. C100 C-log is flatter for sure than Cine D, but the DR difference between the two is a stop or less (or a little more, depending on how you shoot.) It's shocking how close they actually are.
