The Best Panasonic AF100 List Of Links Ever!

Anybody wanting to criticize the Panasonic AF100 or are thinking of purchasing one for indie film production should have a good set of visual tools at their disposal of great directors and writers using it. I truly believe it IS a DSLR Killer. Not a DSLR mass murderer but I have found these examples of what the camera can do in capable hands. Then I bought one with all kinds of goodies attached. Plenty of latitude to be successful with a good to great director. Some "Hype Suckers" have let this sleeping giant slip through their fingers and luckily for us all there ARE inexpensive AF100's on EBAY for under $2800! What a great day to take advantage of techie arrogance...lol. I am now shooting my first feature film with it. Check out the links and please spread them around so people have more than just "The Raid" (GREAT FILM BY THE WAY) as an example of what this great cinema grade camera can do. ENJOY:

With respect, a lot of those films visually don't look so hot. THE RAID in particular looks like video shot in the '90's. Doesn't mean it's bad movie mind you - it's a great action film - but it's not a sales piece for the AF100. HOORAY FOR EARTH prolly the best looking film, taking full advantage of both bright sunlight and slo motion, but it's a short. FULL CIRCLE - also a short - looks.... not great. CONTINUUM looks ok, but there's nothing that makes it visually outstanding. Simply put, most modern video cameras will look great on a (mostly) sunny day, and the AF100 is no different.

And even if you think every film on your list does look great, there are reasons - objective reasons - why someone might not want to buy one, or might criticize the camera. No camera is perfect, and more to the point, no camera is perfect for everyone. Resale value is one objective reason why someone might shy away... and as you point out, that's a sore spot for AF100 owners. MFT mount another. There are literally a hundred threads complaining about other aspects of the camera, particularly highlights. If people want to find a problem with it, then they will.

In any case, the AF100 hasn't so much a plucked a hair off the head DSLR sales much less killed them.

But I agree with you sentiment as a whole - it's a fine camera that in the right hands can make some beautiful pictures and it can do so at a very good price, particularly if you score a deal on ebay. Which is what I'd expect just about every regular visitor to this web site to say. While there might be people who prefer a different camera, I doubt if anyone here would say it's not a professional camera, one more then capable of shooting good footage. I hope to own a swarm of them at some point.

Well put. I guess the overall point I am making is, it gets tiring hearing so many people blasting off at the mouth about m43 not being super 35mm and 16mm not being 35mm and 2k not being 4k, 5k, or 8k. We are supposed to be a community of creative people and it feels as though creative people are being trampled by geeks. I personally don't think they have a place in creative conversations like film making. The truth of the matter is simple. Stay in the lab and out of the determinate process of camera selection for film makers. Sensor size and tech specs do NOT matter in the least to the viewer/consumer. And with post grading, grain, color correction, & up resolution methods you can make most cameras in existence look nearly IDENTICAL. I just want new producers and directors to know without question that you can make a successful film on a DVX100, HVX, a 35mm adapter on damn near anything, an AF100, Scarlet, FS100, Red Epic, Black Magic, 5D, 7D, 1D, C100, C300, C500, 16mm, 35mm, Super 35, or any Arri digital or film camera. That is, if you have TALENT. I finally after YEARS of following this site have decided to weigh in and become a member instead of spectating from a distance. Now after that rant I feel much better...lol. WOO SAH!

I cant imagine that any one could be serious about any complaint on the resale value. I bought mine on day 1, preordered it months early even, and only paid $4800.Havent seen one sell for much less than $2800 so $2000 over 2 years. Seems pretty damn good to me. Any camera doing any better than that by a big margin? Think of the red guys had %50 knocked off the price over night!

Resale value is pretty fair if any one was asking me.

Also I have been getting the best images I have ever gotten out of my little AF100 in the last few months. Its a great camera and can work really well. It has its limits as everything does, although Id say its easier to over step the limits with this camera than many others. That just makes you learn a lot faster, which has been the biggest benefit I have gotten from any piece of kit I have ever owned.

Any way, top list, very interesting :)

Great list! Hooray for Earth has always been one of my favorites. Great lens flares and high whites and all the things you "can't do with an AF100." Mostly it's a well conceived well shot and beautiful piece. I have been pushing the AF100 a more now that I have had a couple of years with it. I'm really pleased with the results.

Here's some stuff from a short I'm in post with http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthrea...s-from-this-short&p=1986282138#post1986282138

Hopefully it will make the list some day!

It already has Scully. Your stuff is one of the best examples of AF100 footage I have ever seen. Not only the above link, but also your past stuff.

As for the list above being the Best List Of Links Ever! Well, not by any stretch! Most of the videos look actually pretty poor. There are some stuff shot by kids, full of blown highlights, bad exposure and just overall amateur looking. Also, dreallen, if what you want is to show what the AF100 can do never post youtube links. Everything looks horrible on youtube.

So back to this being the best links, what are we judging here? Content? This can be subjective. But by your rant I get the impression what we are supposed to be judging is image quality and most of these clips look just plain bad! Sorry.

Adam, forgive me but the geek he's referring to can largely be summed up by your very DVXuser account. You are always commenting in a largely argumentative way about camera performance and specs, judging images shot by others or complaining about the AF100, on the AF boards you have kind of quietened down but elsewhere you are demanding F35 owners shoot you a test so you can show them the errors of their ways.

Earn a little credibility and post up a few examples of your work, for better or worse put your opinion to a side and show us your talents, you will have less arguments if you made yourself credible. We have all seen you duck out of a thread when asked to show a few examples of your work or even a screen grab and usually after posting a similar post to the above.

The OP made a very good point in his second post and I am not saying the examples he has shown are amazing, though quite a few do really shine and are generally low budget affairs which other higher price bracket cameras might not be involved with, I.e. I expect an ARRI or RED shoot to look better technically than an AF100 or DSLR shoot and logically I am right, but in the real world this "flawed" camera, as the OP pointed out has produced great results, even profitable results and that is something to be celebrated.

I am just DYING to find out what an OP is...lol. And I was normally shooting with an HVX200A with a red rock adapter on the music video projects I directed so I am in candyland with the AF100. I have no samples of my work on the AF100 but here is a link to my directors reel with the HVX200a which admittedly looks like CRAP! I have learned so much since then. I am here to learn as much as I can because I am about to begin production of my new film "Lost Vegas". Very low budget but I am determined to make it look like a million!

By the way...I didn't mean to start an argument here...lol

Great stuff! I think alot can be done with this camera that the specs say you can't. Shows what a useless word "CANT" really is...lol

You know what's funny and clearly shows the bias against me here? I basically said the very same thing JDV said. But I get flak.(Not that I really care). Complaining about the AF100? Did I do that in my post? I think you may be seeing things.

on the AF boards you have kind of quietened down but elsewhere you are demanding F35 owners shoot you a test so you can show them the errors of their ways.

Honestly, if you going to point fingers make sure you get it right and are not spreading false info around. I could go in that thread and get quotes and that would not make you look good. But I will digress. I don't care enough about people's opinions to go through the trouble. But what happened was that somebody came in and called us all idiots saying we wouldn't be able to tell the difference between the F35 and a totally different camera. So I said to him to shoot some samples and post it to test us if we really are the idiots he is implying we are. I also had people agreeing with me there. Now you're saying I was demanding F35 owners shoot you a test so you can show them the errors of their ways? Demanding? Not at all. To show them the errors of their ways? I could care less if they make mistakes. This wasn't what it was about at all. Check your facts before posting.

We have already talked about this. So I would just stop the broken record behavior.
Do I look like I'm worried about credibility on an internet forum? I don't need to earn any credibility for something I do for free. If people think I have no idea what I'm talking about and that I sound like a totally clueless person when it comes to cameras and production, just ignore my posts. But you know the other funny thing? Another case of the bias showing it's horns? There are people who clearly put themselves on a high horse here and searching the forums I could never find any footage they have posted, besides some run of the mill tests. Yet, no flak. I will not name names as my intention is not to put anybody down. How they are perceived is not under their control anyway.

Look, my post had nothing to do with the camera. Did you miss the part where I highly praised Scully's stuff, which was shot with the AF100? So I have no idea why you're making it about cameras. It was about those not being good examples of what the AF100 can do at all. I wrote it almost exactly in these same words. I know of many, many better examples online. That's what my post was about. So I have no idea what you are on about. Was one of the linked clips yours and you got offended? There are a couple clips there that look nice.

Ill send you a message, far to many times we bicker in threads, mostly my fault. I shouldn't respond to your posts.

dreallen, I can't wait to watch through all of these! It's going to take a while to find that much time. Can't wait to see what you turn out with your upcoming feature. What state are you in, btw? I'm curious as far as your crew goes. Anywhere near me?

I'm in Las Vegas. Thanks for the kind words Brandon. This movie is pretty groundbreaking and is going to be taken as rather controversial in the community it is based. I know i'm going to have challenges but hey...I can't just make some pointless film that's violent for the sake of violence or over sappy. Yes...there will be violence and blood...but I want to take an honest look at the possibilities that no one really thinks of...even if they do...they aren't really brought to life visually.

That sounds great. If a film ruffles a few feathers, then it's doing something right! Best of luck to you.

The link to RAID on vimeo is not the HD original, it is SD and looks like it might be a download/reupload. Just thought I should point that out...

Nah, I saw in a proper theater - it positively screams "shot with a video camera" - whereas something like "Hooray For Earth" doesn't.
