The Best On-Camera LED Light

Does that night offer any warming filter? Most LED lights are made for day light color balance. If you use that indoor, the object will appears very blue. You can't just white balance the camera. If you do, anything near the camera will look correct, but things behind will be complete orange.

For inexpensive option, I think the Z96 is a great choice. CN-160 is not bad too. But Z96 is more sturdy in my opinion.
 
I'm not sure if you're talking to me but if you are then I don't believe it comes with a filter... I guess it doesn't seem as practical as the other led light panels but for $32 bucks, it looks like something fun to experiment with.
 
Yes I'm talking about the ring light. I guess it won't hurt at all for $32 to try out the light. Even if it doesn't work for video (which I'm sure there will be problem using it indoor without any filter), you can use it to light your closet. =)
 
Well, I just ordered it off amazon. If it sucks then I guess I will have something to light my closet, lol I hope I can use this on my Tokina 11-16mm lens without any kind of vignette but I maybe hoping for too much. The site says it has adapters all the way up to 67mm but the Tokina's thread size is 77mm.. Perhaps I can find some sort of "step down"(hope that's the correct term) adapters?
 
This is a bit off-topic, but would an LED panel also be usable for still product photography? I use a lot of diffusion when I take photos, so I was debating getting a flash for my new GH2 or an LED panel. Being able to get enough output for stills would be great. If anyone has any comparison pictures, I would be grateful.

Yes LED lights can be used in still photography. Our own photographer use LED light so he doesn't use much flash light. Check out these photos shot using LED light

Using Z96 for close up with be no problem. However, when shooting a little bit far, these LED lights output drop a lot after a few feet. So you will need a more powerful LED lights for that purpose.

Yes beware of these asian greedpain sellers! I bought this: http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=170577055858 and was waiting for 2 months while the seller sent me fake tracking numbers on fake shipping sites! finally got painpal to refund my money.....never again! greedpain didnt even check the fraud as long as he pays his greedpain seller fees! I got litepanel, they work with simple AA batteries, no cables or fuzzy adapters needed.
 
I couldn't resist replying to this thread. I use two Zylight Z90s and they are nothing short of fantastic. Not cheap but like most things in this biz you get what you pay for...mostly. The advantages are on the website but in short, I can shoot daylight or tungsten with the filick of a switch, use one or both as colour ..any colour and control control and dim both lights from one wireless all built in. They are made in the USA, make that well made and run off a belt, Takkeon, Tap or power adapter. If they were ever to break ..you can send 'em in and get them fixed.
As for ring lights I have tried many LED types but nothing compares to my Kino Kamio so far. It also runs off a belt and it worth every penny.

It's not gonna light up a whole room and probably won't be ideal for interviewing situations but it gives a pretty cool look. Very fun to mess with and VERY bright. Can't complain for $33($35 now)
 
haha! Can't beat the price. However, is that really what you are hoping for? A light that lit up only the center of the frame and blind the person you are filming? hehe

The other day at a wedding, It was funny one lady keep staring at the light and complain it was too bright. I told her not to look at the light. (it was an on-camera light). I would think with this ring light, it would be really bad for interviews.
 
Honestly, yeah.. that all I really expected out of this thing lol. I probably would never want to use this for wedding and such but YES THIS THING IS BRIGHT! You can tell my sister wasn't too happy at that thing pointed at her for too long... Which makes me curious about how people use on-camera lights in low light without pissing people off.... There's this one music video of an artist, Mike Posner... In his music video, it looks like he has direct lighting towards his face as he walking towards the camera. I wonder how they achieved this without blinding the guy.. or maybe he just had to get used to it. haha

I think what you mean was this is what you expect but not what you hope for. =)

Almost all LED lights brightness fall off pretty quick after a few feet. So the light is bright to you when you are holding it in your hand. You can tell from your Vimeo video, when you stepped back a little, the light isn't bright at all.

On-camera light is different than this on-lens light. I use on-camera light with dimmer. and it is mounted on top of the camera. When I interview guests at weddings, they are looking at the lens, but not looking at the light. However, with this ring light being mounted on the lens, the interviewee will have no other choice but to look at the light directly. That's not going to work at all.
 
It definitely isn't going to work for up close face shots... I just thought the light would be more bearable to look at but man was I wrong. Should be getting a macro lens soon, hope this light is at-least good for what it's intended for.

Ditto. My favorite feature using this light is the unbelievably even light spread, even without any sort of modifier, though I'll probably end up getting one anyway because the light is so damn bright. In practice it doesn't even look like a light, but as though someone turned up the brightness.
