I mentioned this on the redrock forum, but I mgiht as well say it again here:

It seems that adding the two micromounts and the short rod is abit pointless. Your still only gripping one of the rods, and the added mounds and rod is just bracing the two swing away rods together, which are the same thing anyway and dont need bracing.

Your still holding the mattebox up with just one rod, regardless of the extra clamps and rods.

Also this totally destroys the 80mm standard distance between rod and lens centres...

The mattebox (even without 4x 5.65 filters) will not hold with just a single rod clamping it on the swing away rods. You need the 2 mounts and short rod to give it structure. Also, I did not show it on my setup, but I use the Zacuto Z-Riser to compensate for the 80mm std distance between rod and the center of the lens. You also still have the vertical adjustment on the mattebox itself. I am, of course waiting for Redrock to make changes to their design, but till then, my current setup works just fine for me. :love4:

And also, my Zacuto universal baseplate and many baseplate systems today also have vertical adjustment capability.

Why not just switch out the swingway bracket rods for something longer by 2". Set it up so the bracket rods are in their shortest (nearest to lens) position and the baseplate rods touch the mattebox with your shortest lesns.. So now you should have at least 6 inches (two on the baseplate rods and four on the backet rods) of forward travel when you use longer lenses. This should accommodate just about any lens in the kit except long zooms (in that case you'll need extensions - which you'd need in most cases anyway).

Haven't tried this but was suggested to me by another tech who ran into the same issue.

As much as I admire you technical chutzpah, hanging on by one rod mount is asking for trouble, especially in hand held or vehicles. I can see it now, mattebox giving your lens a nice karate chop. Sounds like a trail of tears.

Switching out the 2x side rails will not solve the problem that the clamp on the baseplate rod still has to be on the last thing on the rods. I have the Nikon 80-200 as well as the 50mm f1.4 prime, so I really need the range.

If I have time I will do a short video clip on just how solid the system is as i had it configured. The brace essentially act as the 2nd rod support. You need to literally sit on the mattebox in order to make it budge.

What is the wait on those RR adaptors? I see what your saying. What about using longer siderods. Wouldn't that increase the travel?
