The best alternative to P2

It's been talked about in these forums latley, but comparing all the alternatives to P2 that handles HD what choices do we have, at what prices? The ones I found where these, but I only know them by the specs...

Use a Laptop!
This is not very portable:

What else do we have? What's the best choice?

I think the best choice is ...
to wait and see what developes Tech wise and Price wise
I'm gonna try my laptop to start until I see what is what
until either the Firestore will come out and the 2 Price may fall

I think the cineporter looks most promising. All are to high priced at the moment.

I'll be using my laptop for the time being until the prices drop.

If the panasonic guy is right and the 4gig cards drop after the 1st year to around 100 bucks a piece, then I'll be buying quite a few of them. but till the price drops.

of course, by the time that happens, there may be an altogether better system out for even less.

for the time being it just makes more sense to buy a great laptop that will also serve as your editing laptop, killing two birds with one stone so to speak.

The Wafian would work also...

So would recording direct to the AJ-HD1200A deck...

?

Panasonic AJ-HD1200A DVCPRO HD DVCAM & DV VTR
Part # 14079
$21,000.00(Quote me a better price)

Isn't there a problem with continios use of a P2 slot, something about overheating? Maybe they'll have that worked out by production time, but I think I'll wait on anything that plugs into the P2 including the cards (until I can afford them).

wait until you can afford them?

dude, you're supposed to extend yourself out to your maximum credit limit. don't you know that's the American way :)

Has anyone done any research on which company and model is the most powerfull 17" laptop for editing whether it be pc or mac? Toshiba has this model - see link. Anything better recommended?

FCP5 on the Mac platform is the most integrated NLE for DVC-Pro HD right now. So despite speed or anything else a Powerbook is going to be the most efficient and powerfull editing mobile.

Avid Xpress Pro HD is actually the most integrated NLE for DVCPRO HD. And has been for some time now.

With that being said someone could easily recommend a pc laptop along with avid. All depends on what your favorite flavor is.

What's stopping someone from taking a linux-based SBC with cardbus and USB/FW/IDE, and rolling their own P4->HD adapter? (And making it open-source, so others can build upon it.)

Waaaaaaaay back when I was studying computer engineering we were regularly given these types of projects ('course we had to use crappy industrial controllers and write everything in assembly).

Is Panasonic keeping their protocols under strict non-disclosure?

The new Apple 13.3 inch widescreen Intel based Ibook. Out on Jan 6!
Will probably be as fast as the Powerbooks, but in the Ibook price range.

Apple 17" laptop

Apple 17" laptop

Besides my G5s, I've been mobile editing on my Apple Powerbook 17" for over a year. As to what laptop or system someone should or shouldn't use is really quite simple. What system are you most comfortable with and does that system handle the newest technology? In my case, I'm very comfortable with FCP hd 5. and my laptop can handle it.

I'm starting to incline more towards a laptop lately, as opposed to the firestore and Cineport drive.

A typical laptop is much cheaper and more versatile.

It's probably a pain for run and gun stuff, but for indie work, it's more acceptable.

For indie work, an HVX with two 4GB P2 cards ($7000) and a 250GB off-the-shelf firewire hard disk ($150) is perfect. No laptop required. Just fill up the cards, plug in the hard disk, dump footage from cards to hard disk, erase cards, repeat as necessary.

The HVX has a "verify" feature that makes sure it copied the data correctly to the hard disk. If you want an instant backup, just dump the footage twice to two different hard disks before erasing.

I agree,
But...
How wiill you be getting Power to the external HD's out in the field...
easily & consistantly
& without interrupting shooting to download?
There is the iPod solution, but that's gonna be Slow

I think I will be strapping my laptop in to a messinger bag around my shoulder and will be Dumping P2 Cards there as they fill up
or
I can record directly through it as well, if I really need to Roll nonstop for awhile
Also... You can be using this as a Monitor in the field as well

This seems the more versitile solution...
