The Before And After Lighting thread

This is a fantastic thread. Bonus point if you give a brief summary on how you light it. But really thanks a lot guys, its a great source of inspiration.

Love the vid and the effects. How did you create it?

A film was made (not by me) of paint and swirls and stuff and writing/graphics, which was cut to the tune.

Huge white cove, blacked out room.

That film was projected on to the band as they performed.

Around that projection were an additional 8 oil projectors going all over the cove

We filmed the performance (or shadows of the performance!) a few times me (fs7), wide, and tight, 50mm 1.4, 80mm free lensed, 18mm, jack (a7s) running around with his anamorphic on a steadicam

Some extra shots were done thus.. SD video camera pointed at the band into a projector which was pointing at the band - so they have themselves projected on themselves, which was filmed by me with a 50

This 'live footage' was then intercut with the original film sometimes at low opacity to blend the two. The opening shot is a shot, and itself flipped and at 50% opacity.

Resolve all the way.

where can I watch the shortfilm?

Well it's called 'Breathing Wild' and its premiering at the Sydney Indie Film festival next Saturday, might be a bit far for you to travel though! I let you know if it reaches American shores, or when it goes up online.

This is the funniest (and craziest at the same time) before & after I have ever produced:

Recently did a small series of "cooking with one hand" videos for a local magazine. In this case I pretty much just wanted to augment the existing daylight, so I just used 1 M18 and one 2k blonde with full CTB. This also enabled me to used part of the window in the shot, so I didn't have to think about that when shooting down the length of the table.

Thanks Rafael, valeu! The fact they're in silhoettes is really important to the story and how it all unfolds.

Cheers

De nada! Keep us posted as to when we can watch it. Was this part of the same project on your other thread "Lighting Cozy"? That shot came out nicely as well. I forgot to mention that on there ;)

Thanks! Yes, it's from the same project. Hopefully, we'll have it ready before the end of the year. :)

The black cloth is at the floor killing bounce?
The 2K blonde bounces up in the wooden frame with frost or shoots down though it at around 45°..?

Sorry mate... didn't realise you had responded :)

Yes, I shot them against our white cyc and wanted to keep the contrast. The floor was fighting this a little bit.

The blonde went through the frost directly. It resembles a bit what we would do when shooting beauty stills with an octa box. But since the frame is so wide it wraps a lot more. Maybe it's more like our Broncolor Para to be honest.
You could ofcourse move it slightly left or right if you wanted a bit more shape.

Here's a recent one, a hyper bland Malaysian restaurant that I had to try and transform into something a little more Wong Kar-wai-ish:

Nice one Mark, they look great.

Attempt at guessing the lighting set up - fomex above table, blue/red gelled M9s, Area 48 for extra on the left in the wide?

Did you screen the window on the red side because you didn't like the exterior or was it for a reflection?
