The Adjustment Bureau

Very cool idea. Reminds me a tiny bit of Dark City.

Do we control our destiny, or do unseen forces manipulate us? Matt Damon stars in the thriller The Adjustment Bureau as a man who glimpses the future Fate has planned for him and realizes he wants something else. To get it, he must pursue the only woman he’s ever loved across, under and through the streets of modern–day New York. On the brink of winning a seat in the U.S. Senate, ambitious politician David Norris (Damon) meets beautiful contemporary ballet dancer Elise Sellas (Emily Blunt)—a woman like none he’s ever known. But just as he realizes he’s falling for her, mysterious men conspire to keep the two apart. David learns he is up against the agents of Fate itself—the men of The Adjustment Bureau—who will do everything in their considerable power to prevent David and Elise from being together. In the face of overwhelming odds, he must either let her go and accept a predetermined path…or risk everything to defy Fate and be with her.

I remember Dark City!...A classic...This does remind me of it a wee bit too much, but looks good regardless.

I thought the same thing when I saw the trailer before Robin Hood. Why is it that nobody really remembers Dark City? It was so good.

Dark City blew me away back in the day when I saw it opening night. Shame it didn't do better.

They'll probably remake it in the near future.

It seems to me to feel a lot like a Twilight Zone episode updated and given color, but in terms of the story/idea a bit like Dark City as well. Then again, it is based on a Philip K. Dick story, so the Dark City alternate or shifting reality vibe is not surprising coming from his work.

On a lighter note, I kept feeling like Don Draper was gonna show up before the trailer ended.

Just saw that. Interesting.

While looking at his IMDb page, I notice Total Recall is in pre-production. Are we ready for a remake?

Hell poo pooing no!!!!

The only Philip K. Dick inspired film that could use a remake is Second Variety, which was made as Screamers with Peter Weller. Not a bad film, but both the original story and original title are better.

Just came back from this. I didn't know what to make of this when I saw the trailer, and its pushed back release wasn't a good sign, but it's been getting some decent reviews so I decided, "what the heck." I really liked this, but it wasn't a good film. If anything, it proves that if you have a goofy plot you can make it watchable, even thrilling at times, by throwing a bunch of good actors at it with great chemistry between them. Fizzled out in an anti-climatic finale, but it hardly mattered--the audience clapped anyway. The main thing that bothered me was the score; just horribly generic and even distracting at times. It could have been a much better film by changing the score alone. Still, 3 out 4 stars going by the Ebert scale.

Reminds me of a Twilight Zone episode where a guy accidently walks into an alley and sees men in white coveralls, apparently, setting up the next moment into the future. They were constructing a part of the block where someone was suppossed to walk into. Really weird episode, even more difficult to explain. Im sure some of you might remember that episode. '

Great idea/concept but could of been executed much better or it could of been worst also. 2/4 stars.

On another Note: I also don't get why Dark City doesn't get much love outside the hardcore film people. When I first saw that movie I was like "WOW" I only saw it because of talks about it here on the dvx boards, had no idea what I was missing. I guess it's one of those movies that fall in that cult category not by choice, but I don't think any movie that becomes a cult movie is by choice. Anyway back to thread...

Saw it, liked it, would probably not see it again unless in good company. All in all, a decent film without too much depth and a not-so-great ending. Could've been more, could've been less.

I really enjoyed this. I agree that it didn't push things to the max in terms of exploring its concepts and fictional world, but overall it was still pretty darn good.

I actually got a Field of Dreams vibe about this film. Sort of how there is some mystery and the spiritual or magical elements aren't totally revealed, but it just works regardless for the plot.

I feel that the chemistry is really what held this all together, but aside from that there wasn't much more. The bureau aspect of it was pretty weak.

It's hard to not compare this to dark city, despite their huge differences. The idea is still the same though.

The trailer is false advertising...its a romance movie. Once that settles in the movie is ok !
Lots of out focus shots to !

I do. I thought of it, too. It had Adam Arkin and Karen Austin it. The ending wasn't terribly dissimilar.

Rented it from RedBox last week. Just what I thought: It's like Dark City, except not as good. And considerably brighter.
