The Action Film

First time poster here, definitively obsessed by the DVX100 and found this site a while back.

I've been doing a lot of short films using only a Sony Digital TRV250 and relatively huge post production work to fill my short films with special effects.

There is a huge contest in Quebec organised by the National Film Board of Canada and the grand price is... a Panasonic HVX200.

On november 19th and 20th I shot a movie called "The Action Film" with the goal of submitting it to the contest using a brand new rented DVX100B. The deadline was december 15 2005 and I gave the film on december 14 after 3 weeks of heavy post-production. On december 23th, also the date of my birthday, I received the news that my film was selected among the 20 best out of 335 films submitted.

You can download the film subtitled in english at www.theactionfilm.com

Since last friday, the film is online for the contest at this address:
http://www.onf.ca/lecourtenweb/ (in french)

The page to vote and see my film is this one:
http://www.onf.ca/lecourtenweb/visionner.p...ilm=9&vitesse=h
Obviously, all is in french so I made up a page with detailed explanations on how to rate my film http://www.theactionfilm.com/main.php?section=8&lg=en .

If you like it and have some spare time to support an unknown amateur filmmaker, here's the details:

The structure for the contest is this one:
Every week, the 4 least popular films are eliminated and counters are reset to zero. That's why a vote, every week, can make a huge difference for me.

- From january 13th to 19th 2006 : 20 films
- From january 20th to 26th 2006: 16 films
- From january 27th to february 2nd 2006: 12 films
- From february 3rd to 9th 2006: 8 films
- From february 10th to 17th 2006 : 4 films

Every week, one voter (people from the United-States are elligible) will get :

- A JVC DVD player (Compatible with DVD-R, DVD-RW, video-DVD, VCD, CD, CD-R, CD-RW, MP3, WMA, JPEG
- 50$ at the National Film Board of Canada.

Thanks a lot and don't hesitate to leave feedback.

Thanks a lot for the vote.

As for the link, I have a huge reseller account on a generally reliable host... still, everything seems to be suddenly dead. Hahaha. The site was sustaining heavy traffic since saturday and I still have a lot of bandwidth left. I'll investigate. Sorry for posting a now-dead link.

EDIT3: It's back online

Just watched the movie. I enjoyed it a lot! It is funny and the effects were done pretty well. What program did you use for compositing? Everyone needs to see this film and I wish you the best.

3D Max for the helicopters. After-Effects only for compositing and main title animations. The download server now works. I hope for a long time.

Normally trolling for votes is a no no. I liked your film and voted for it. I watched it in french and translated the page with google. I'm not sure if it was intended to be funny but with the over the top effects it was humorous. Nice work.

olivier,

Managed to download it. I really enjoyed it, but for the first few minutes I was thinking "what the hell is this." The beginning is a little tacky. I'll break it down:thumbsup:

Things I didn't like (bad news first:)):

* Some of the camera work and editing isn't quite there. I liked where you were heading with the style though.
* The interiors were badly lit. In fact didn't look lit at all.
* The effects weren't 100% convincing, but in the context of the film, they did work.
* The start was a little tacky.

Things I liked:

* Most importantly I enjoyed watching it! It was fun!
* The pacing was good, especially once it kicked in.
* A lot of the technical weaknesses are masked (kinda) by the ridiculous nature of the story.

Basically,, you have a good story telling talent IMHO and I look forward to your next film. I would try and improve on the technical side of things though, smooth out the rough edges.
