The 14mm and 24mm Rokinon lens update...

I'm curious as to who really wants the 14mm. I previously spent $105 and had Duclos add a gear to my Tokina 11-16mm.

The Tokina doesn't have an aperture ring, but... with the Prolock that isn't a big issue issue. Its just that the Tokina is an exceptionally damn fine lens. The Duclos full PL conversion sells like hot cakes.

1. Accuracy: If the 14mm is the same as the non-cine version it will have more barrel distortion than the 11-16mm. Probably a little more CA too, but no testing yet.

2. Zoom: Being a zoom the 11-16mm will be more versatile.

3. Speed: They are both are both about the same speed since T3.1 is usually pretty much the same as F2.8. Real world testing may be different.

4. Sensor Size: The Tokina is for S35/DX sized sensors. I believe the Rokinon is full frame. If you have a 5D that could make all the difference in the world. (Or future proofing.)

The are both about the same size, same diameter front, same filter size, and similar price.

On the other hand, expecting the cine 24mm to be the same as the non-cine, the 24mm T1.5 should be sharp, fast, smooth and high contrast. Yum.

I just pre-ordered one from B&H. They also have a T3.1 Cine Tilt shift lens available from Rokinon. It should ship around the 15th. 24mm is a great focal length on the F3 and at T 1.5 it should be very nice.

That's kind of my dream matching set. 24mm, 35mm, 50mm, 85mm all in T1.5. No need to adjust anything while switching from lens to lens. No fussing with external gears.

And at T1.5 on an F3 the thing will practically see in the dark. Just a bit of gain and it will see better than the human eye which is amazing.

Here is a picture of the 14mm and 24mm. (Not on at the same scale. Probably the 14mm is shorter.) As expected the 14mm seems a cross between the 8mm fisheye and the 35mm. The 14mm seems to have a fixed and slightly larger petal hood, but again its so wide you could never use a mattebox anyway.

Another thing, I like B&H and use them often, but B&H is charging shipping. One dealer is selling these cine lenses directly on ebay with free shipping. B&H needs to get on the ball. Priced at $449 and $749 respectively.
