The $14 steadicam thread??

does anyone have the http for the $14 steadicam i've been reading about?

any thoughts on the end product??

its so so

my friend built one and we used it for a project. It stays steady but is near impossible to balance on a verticle or horrizontal plane. So it sways left and right, and acts more like a counterbalance then a stabalizer.

I made one, but I can't really tell if it works or not haha. I can tell you that with the DVX and a trailer hitch the sucker gets REALLY heavy after a little while, maybe you wanna start lifting weights or something if you can.

Not a steadicam. Not even close. The rig rig is balanced, this isn't even that.
Really this is no more than a big handle on the camera. Why you'd want to carry so much weight when you can achive much better with much less I don't know.

I used one and found it a great way to get smooth shots that are not as floaty as a steadycam. I's great for smoothing out handheld work while retaining a bit of the kinetic flavor of handheld.

There has been some great mods to the 14 dollar steady cam here that make it even better looking...

well first improvement to the design. pull off that pipe that sticks out to the side. - or if you want, put on on the other side too to make it a "+" shape. then it's balanced.

but really, own a tripod? just hold the legs together and add a bit of weight for counterbalance and you will do the same thing.

Of course if you really want to get any "good" shots, that are properly near Steadicam like, then you've gota put in a gimble. But that's not cheaper.

I'm not going to go into depth over that thing, been there enough times. Lest I just say: It's not a steadi/cam, he should call it something else.

steadicam, i believe, is a brand name....so yeah, he should just call it a stabilizer. but it is the best 14 dollar stabilizer i've seen.

and agreed. lose that side bar.

the stabilizer i will build will be modeled after this design...

i like the gimbal placement - it looks like the least fatiguing option...shouldn't be too hard to build i don't think....

Yes, that is a very simple, and effective design. It benefits from the gimble plaement of the JR/Merlin (above your hand, not to the side) which helps against fatigue.
