That does it! Why I HATE prosumer cameras!

Yo shooter, I feel you pain brother!!! Yet I gotta ask... Would you be shooting shots for YOUR OWN "woefully unprepared Sci-Fi short" if you did not own a pro-sumer camera? Maybe you have the bucks to answer yes to that. I lot of the rest of us don't, for now.

Besides, don't think of it as poor design, think of it a building character!.

I know that anytime I'm getting ready to direct a crucial scene the only thing on my mind is that crappy ass button. Never mind making sure the lighting is just right and the actors have the right mood on their faces and any concerns of getting this wrapped before I lose another day of shooting and have to spring for another day of "catering" (McDonalds or some such)....nope, I'm just dreading having to turn that little switch and press ever so slightly inward! Hell, I'd rather have an on switch turner on'er than a focus puller!

Hey, what is the current IATSE day rate for Switch Turner on'ers?

I can't wait to get A.S.S.T.O. after my name in the credits. (American Society of Switch Turner On'ers, of course).

I'm with you on the zoom, iris and record button but the on off?

Man I can do it with one finger no problem with my eyes on the road while driving backward down a one way street.

Get your technique down.

I don't think I've ever laughed so hard at a DVXUSER post! Thanks for lightening up my mood! Both graphics--VERY nicely done, and EXTREMELY funny! Kudos!

i'm not pro, but i didn't think the DVX was *that* hard to use...
It's not just the DVX. My Sony VX2000 is JUST as guilty at being hard to turn on with a similar switch design. It just baffles me why prosumer camera designers are so friggin' paranoid about us accidentally turning the camera on. You'd think that kind of design would be reserved for switches with more grave consequences than simply running a battery down.

Glad you had a laugh, I thought it might help.

Some valid gripes, but the on switch is no problem.

Before you put your right hand through the strap, lay thumb flat on switch. Push and turn at same time.

Ok, this assumes cam is laying in palm of left hand or is on tripod. And that you are not filled with beer.

So then buy a real camera. I don't see the problem. Why complain?
I am going to buy a real camera. I really was drawn to the HVX200, but I just decided today. I want real switches and lens controls. It's the Sony PDW-F330 XDCAM HD for me, now (or maybe the DSR450 for its larger 2/3" CCD). Why complain? I felt like whining real bad today . . .

That's my problem. My hand is RARELY holding the camera by its strap. The camera is typically either on a fluid head, a handheld bracket, or on my Steadicam Flyer.

Come to think of it, I find myself often trying to turn it in the wrong direction, thinking it's stuck. I am a complete idiot, because everytime that happens, I think I am not pressing the little switch in the exact perfect manner it wants me to.

Then I realize, "Oh yeah, clockwise for on."

Dang prosumer brain.

you should gift me with your steadicam, so you will not have the problem

Listen, when I was your age we didn't have prosumer cameras. We had cave walls and sticks from the fire (if we were lucky) you and your damn on off buttons and iris controls! we had to squint if it was to bright! Hard to press the little button? try lugging around a cave wall. And there was no strap on those cave walls either.
You kids have everything!

RUBBISH! You were lucky to have cave walls. When I was your age, I had to carve 24 frames per second on the side of a running bracchiosaurus, using my tongue. And if I was lucky, I'd squeeze my own iris closed with an arrow head.

If I was lucky.

Yup. Those were the days.

NBC, I feel your pain, with all prosumer gear.

Prosumer is nothing "pro" and all "sumer"
Professional gear doesn't need the "pro" tag, it just is, and everyone knows it.

That's all I'm sayin' :lipsrseal

Ok, I'll say one more thing: who the monkey came up with the idea to put a touchscreen on a camera?!

Plus ProSumer cameras spring up websites and arguments all over..

We need only pro cameras, out of reach of most, lacking in evolution, so the industry can still overcharge for a simple camera.

But I do agree the on the on/off thing
Dumbest damn thing I have ever seen (kind of like windows asking you to delete the trash)

Yeah, because even if you realize that there is something useful in there, it's too late anyway, as you already automatically clicked Yes...
