Thanks to all of those who helped me with my camera troubles. I sent the camera back to panasonic and they gave it an all clear. They didn't find anything wrong with it. Either way I learned a whole heap going through this.

The camera is still for sale on ebay for cheap. I am gonna save up for something newer with 2/3 chip or 35mm because I am being asked to so more outdoors stuff now with some creative DOF. I guess I can use my partners DSLR in the mean time. If anyone needs an extra HPX, here it is.

I doubt you can find a more compact camera than the 3xx series with a 2/3" chip, but if creative control of DOF and you don't want or need a run & gun style camera, you could always go for an AF101.
Ideally I would have gone with a 2/3" chip too, back when I was choosing a camera, but it turned out a little complicated. I could have gotten the 500, but it's long in the tooth, the Sony PMW 350K is almost ideal, but only 4:2:0 35mbps long-gop, and with a Nanoflash it brings the price up to where I could now start considering more expensive camcorders, and then I'd be spending at least 2~3x more. The market seems in desperate need of an inexpensive 2/3"er.

NEX FS100... I dunno, I had somewhat bad feelings when I heard of this camera before, but looking at Nigel Cooper's early review today (http://www.dvuser.co.uk/content.php?CID=268)... ouch. The NEX cam looks like I could snap it in half just by looking at it wrongly.

That's one review. This guy says it's built as good as an EX1:

And in this one the reviewer really tosses the camera around. It looks robust enough:

Well I hope so, I'm just skeptical of anything that doesn't look like a single, solid chunk of metal and plastic. Maybe I'm just spoiled.

The HPX3100 is the same size as the HPX300/370 but with 2/3" chips. A bit over twice as expensive.

Yes, but that's not including a lens and viewfinder so the real cost is more like 3x the price, maybe closer to 4x considering the 370's rebate.

Tempting, but counting the fact that it doesn't come with a lens or VF, you'd have to at least spend for a Fujinon XA17x7.6BRM and HVF21G to make the camera usable, making the price more like 30k... a little rich for me, it's almost twice the amount I spent on my entire kit thus far.
That said, I still think I see a 3100 in my future, I just need to beat more money out of my sleazebag clients.

Edit: haha, beat me to it.
