Thank you Tiffen

I can't ignore the 486 filter as well but I never got one mainly due to its higher cost & potential for green vignetting so I waited for the Tiffen.

I shot my fist stage concert last night with it, all my blacks were so beautifully black! Some of these iteams are ones I have filmed before and I know show unnacceptable black IR shift in the past, but not this time, SO HAPPY :-)

GuyB - I have the 486 and the green tint bothers me quite a bit - and I hate having to keep in mind that if I go too wide, it's going to ruin the shot. What's the exact model number of the Tiffen that is the equivalent?

Its called the "T1", came out about a month ago

Unlike the 486 it adds a green tint evenly to the image but you simply white balance it out. You do drop a little light as well.

Guy - mine is on it's way! I am wondering if you can leave it on for an outdoor shot where one would typically use a white preset of 5600. You know how sometimes when roaming outdoors you don't always have time to set a WB, and 5600 looks pretty nice - would one still be able to do that with this filter?

Chad

Chad, yes you can leave it on for exteriors, but you will have to WB--takes all of ten seconds. Or, create your own exterior WB preset. Mine is "B".

David, you have to WB after you put the filter on the lens. Otherwise you'd get a green tint overall.

I love my IR1. I just recently shot some interviews and the one subject's black suit looked great...no turd nrown color anymore...LOL!

There is about a half stop of light loss (maybe 1/3?) but I'd rather deal with that than the murky brown colors. You can check out my Tiffen IR1 filter tests here: http://vimeo.com/7823593 .

And yes, I would highly recommend white balancing manually and not using presets.

Here is my little test. It was a bit dark in the room so I bumped up the exposure post in photoshop. This was shot under a 2 x 60 watt incandescent light fixture, with a bit of window light spilling from the side. Shutter off, iris wide open. Same exact settings (save for white balance) on both shots.

Big difference!

Sony owes me 70.00.

Thats a hell of a difference.

Proof positive.

If Sony don't rebate you Chad then hit up Tiffen for it.....great advert for the filter.
