Text that emmit light

The effect I'm looking for is to make the text a mask for a moging lightsource underneath. So you could see rays of light coming out of the text, from side to side as the source moves. Does anybody know how to make them? Did anybody understand what I am after?

Thanks!

Re: Text that emmit light

Yeah I've done that before.... trying to remember how.

Try making a gradient...circular... with white in the center (or whatever color you want for the light) to black on the outside. Then mask that gradient with the text. Then do a radial blur, centered where the gradient is centered.

Then layer that over the text layered on top of the original gradient... maybe with a lens flare in there. Gradient lens flare and radial blur all centered on the same point (so they'll move together to get the light swooshing behind the text effect).

Umm... I think that little description was a little confusing. Let me know if you can make any sense of it, and if so, is it actually what you were talking about?

Re: Text that emmit light

Oops I just re-read your post and you said you wanted the light FROM the text.. and I was thinking the text is solid with a light poking through from behind it. But just "reverse" what I said any maybe it'll make sense.

i.e., invert the mask on the text... so the gradient shows where the text is... and nowhere else.

Check out Trapcode's Shine (link).  It's basically become the de facto tool for quality (tho easy to do) light rays.  It's used in everything from the Olympics to feature films to fake news shows on cable :)

Hey Taubkin...

Turns out the method I just said does NOT work in AE. I had done it before, but in a different app. And AE's radial blur behaves a bit differently (AE blurs both towards and away from the center, the other app only blurs awa). So doing what I said in AE won't quite work.

I'm sure it's not that hard... just gotta get into AE mindset. I gotta do some work but I'll think about it later.

Desculpa se enrolei muito com o primeiro post. :P

Re: Text that emmit light

..i agree with jive.. trapcodes "shine" is superb for doing what you want.. but AE 6.5 pro also has light ray effects you can use from cycore effects like "light burst" and "light rays" they also do pretty much the same thing, but i dont think they are as good as "shine"

Re: Text that emmit light

Or you could do it with Blender, a free 3d program that is extremely powerful, however, the learning curve is very steap.
I was able to do this as my very first project with blender. Kind of along the lines that you were talking about.
