FS5: Testing the FS5 for review

Working on a review of the FS5 for my blog eriknaso.com and have been shooting different situations over the last week. My time with the camera is coming to a close soon. I did some direct into the sun 240 and 120 FPS tests that was noisy and had lots of banding. This camera likes to push the exposers. It cleans up when you do. Here is a test from today in Lo Jolla.

The banding isn't present in the original file but it does concern me that with the transcoded ProRes LT to Vimeo I can see some in the sky. It's 10 bit 4:2:2 so I expected less. Here is another sample mostly at 240 fps. I needed to expose higher to clean it up. These are all Slog2.

Here is another but this is all 4K.

The camera is fun and matches very well with the FS7. More testing to do in the next few days.

FS5 review?

FS5 review?

Erik - How is your review coming along? I'm looking at the FS5 as my next camera.

Erik,

I have never had good results with banding when transcoding to ProRes LT. I know LT's target data rate is approx 100 Mbps so if you are shooting in 4K 100 Mbps standard ProRes 422 is a better option and has always given me the best results. Maybe try standard ProRes.

Theoretically ProRes LT should be fine, but it is a more highly compressed codec than Prores 422 with roughly 70% of the data rate. I reckon you need the extra data of standard ProRes 422 especially when transcoding 4K.
