Testing my new BlackMagic Video Assist 5" HD 1920x1080 monitor / recorder with the F55. So far so good! Wanted it for the monitor but also a great way to get ProRes super duper cheap.

Quick super fast Review: The BMVA is an absolutely excellent buy at only $495. It's razor sharp. I could easily work off it to pull focus and it has a 1:1 zoom which is great. I couldn't find any way to "pan around" and not sure if you can. I need to read the manual.

Some users reported a tint on their monitor, ie. green. I had absolutely no coloured tint on my image compared to Sony OLED VF or playing back the ProRes file later on my computer. T/C Run trigger works flawlessly. I recorded ProRes 422 HQ to a 64GB SanDisk 95/Mbs Class 3 card.

The monitor does tends to be a little on the "hot" side of things. To match my OLED and the BMVA monitor I used the following monitor settings on the BMVA: Brightness 50%, Contrast 10%, Saturation 50%. If you don't lower your contrast the monitor blows highlights really early and fast!

Between my monitor zebra stripes and my F55 zebra stripes there was a discrepancy between 6-10% IRE. I matched the stripes on both by setting the camera to stripe at 90% IRE, and the BMVA to stripe at 80%. This essentially means that if you used the BMVA stripes to set your exposure, your actual recording will be about 1 stop brighter. When I brought the footage into Davinci Resolve, my white target was in fact hitting 90% IRE on the waveform monitor. This is something you should test in advance of using this unit.

Overall real happy and impressed.

Pros: price, high definition screen resolution, ProRes HD recorder, can be powered with Canon E6 batteries so less cabling required.

Cons: only has histogram and zebras as exposure tools, zebras are not accurate, image is hot by default and may show highlights as blown.

Hi Dennis. You cannot pan around with the 1:1 zoom unfortunately.
I'm really enjoying my VA as well. I just hope they give it waveforms in an update.

I did something a bit interesting later after my testing. During my tests I was testing out the triggering over SDI so I ended up with copies of the exact same footage in both XAVC and ProRes 422 HQ formats.

Pixel peeping 200% to 400% on them there were no notable differences in details or artifacts. They were identical to my eyes. I haven't tried grading them yet to stress the codecs but so far I found it interesting that XAVC is really that good considering it is nearly half the data rate of ProRes 422 HQ...

Ah, interesting!
I played around with it super quickly when I was at a shoot and had forgotten the battery plate for my 7Q+. The BMVA looked like you said, very contrasty with blown highlights. Had no time to fiddle with settings, and as I had no SD card to record ProRes, I disconnected it. Good to know it can be improved with changing the settings!

Try shooting scenes with lots of people and faces moving around, and grade it. Thats where I have seen differences in the past between prores and more compressed formats.

I can get LUTs through the F55 if I really want, so not too much of an issue. I got this mostly as a smaller monitor to my 7" external HD one, it's also a recorder which is good incase I want ProRes HD and don't want to waste time later transcoding. I would always use my light meter and/or OLED VF for setting my exposure, so it's not too bad that this BMVA has no decent exposure tools but I do hope they add WFM or false color to it…

I have been using the BMVA with my GH4, and like it a lot for what it is. Yeah, it would be great if it could record 4K, had better color calibration, scopes and LUTs, but that's a bit much to expect for $500.

I just ordered a FS5 today, so I'm please to know that I can use the BMVA with it.

+1 regarding the XAVC codec being good. I expected the ProRes to be much better, but it was a pleasant surprise to see how good XAVC holds up. I read that the XAVC codec was CPU intensive, but haven't found that to be the case with my "vintage" mid-2010 Mac 5,1 + 32GB RAM.
