Tested the Atomos Ninja and FS100

Bummer, I'm in Windows and I don't have an external recorder...

Hopefully some windows user can chime in, but you just need another codec to work in. There are others, ProRes is just one of them. There is also free software to convert with. I've used MpegStreamClip before to convert between codecs without issue. Maybe DNxHD?

I'd like to use DNxHD, and I know ProRes can be decoded on Windows now, but I've had trouble opening .mts files in MPEG StreamClip in the past. I wish I was home to test it again but I'll have to wait until tonight.

I'll try not to thread-jack this any more so if others have a different workflow please PM me!

Thanks for the info Rick!

I was an early Ninja buyer, and initially wasn't too impressed.

I did however shoot a Christmas themed action film over the weekend & the Ninja shots hold up much better than FS-100's AVCHD when there is fast motion in your scene.

When I get some more time I can post some examples, but I'm now wishing I'd shot the entire thing with the Ninja's ProRes (HQ).

BTW, the FS-100 is the best thing that's happened to me since the 5D Mark II.

Here are some (compressed) stills from the short:

Christmas day if I can bang out the edit in time. It's about a vigilante with killer hemorrhoids on his asshole, so don't watch it with the kids (or wife)!

ryan, how is the fs100 dynamic range and highlight handeling compared to the 5d mark II. I love the way the 5d transitions into its blown out highlights. Also do you think skin tones are handled alot better on the fs100?

I can tell you that after shooting a full doc on the FS100 I'm not too impressed with the highlight handling. It just doesn't roll off well. (The F3 is better, but not $7K better... I'd buy it for other reasons).

However, I shot in Glen's GlenColor (tuned to preserve highlights) and not his new G-Log which looks like it may be better. I have to run some tests. I suspect no PP will make up for the clinical highlight handling in this camera....
