F65: Testament of Youth

Hey guys,

Has anyone seen Testament of Youth yet? Shot by Rob Hardy on the F65 with Crystal Express anamorphics (the same basic combo that he used on Ex Machina I believe).

Trailer looks gorgeous:

Does look really nice!

Apparently he had two set's of lenses, anamorphic and spherical,

"The anamorphic lenses created this specific world she inhabited which was very much about her and the environment whereas the circle lenses were really used to break through that barrier and get super close when we needed to."

Maybe I need F65 not F35

I reckon you should try and track down Hardy's colourist instead. And see if you can't trade him beer money for an hour's skype call to pick his brains on wrangling that kind of beauty from the depths of Sony colour science.

Looks like some serious filtration going on there.

Personally I am not a huge fan of anamorphic in general, definitely not on F65.

No, after that last monster thread, I've come to the conclusion it's just not possible to have nice images on the Sonys

I believe the xTal lenses are re-housed vintage Cookes. To my eye they are doing a lovely job of taking the edge off the image. Unlike the F35's 16x9 sensor and subsequent crazy wide aspects, being able to shoot 2x squeeze is a definite perk you F65 folks have!

Yes they are Cooke S2 & S3s with anamorphic fronts put on by JDC. The amount of glow in these shots looks like more than you'd get from the lenses naturally.

The Xtals were used on Mask of Zorro I know.

The F65's sensor is the same size and aspect as the F35's, it is only a resolution advantage that makes it "more" suitable for anamorphic.

Thanks for clarifying that. I had thought (assumed) the F65 offered a 4:3 mode. Interesting to think that both this film and Ex Machina are all blowup/crops on much wider recorded frames.

Yes they are cropped from the centre of the chip. I recall Sony saying they didn't want to include this mode, but were pressured into it. The cameras has modes for both 1.33x and 2x anamorphic lenses.

Sure there's a crop factor, but you still end up with similar sort of resolution to Alexa in 4:3 mode, and you also crop out the worse offending edges of the anamorphic glass. So I don't think it's an intrinsically restrictive way to shoot.

Personally I think a lot of the character of older anamorphic glass is in the edges, so you crop those and you lose a lot of it. If technical quality is the primary concern, why shoot anamorphic?

IMHO, the F65 is the finest digital cinema camera in the world. What people need to do when shooting with it is know how to handle all that resolution.

It's nice the camera offers crop modes as convenience, but I'd probably be more inclined to record out the full 4k image and have flexibility for reframing the clip on X after scaling it up. As JMtheDP mentioned, the edge distortion is sometimes desired and this would also allow keeping it (on one side of the frame) when desired.

FWIW the camera does NOT crop anything when recording. Selecting anamorphic in-camera only changes the display so you get the correct AR, that's all.

This is isn't a critic of the camera but obviously the post pipeline (I assume )....

But why does the BBC diffuse the crap our of everything ?
