Test Shots(Shards of Darkness)

I just did these last night and I think they look better than the ones I posted here before. I know they are still dark but I was just seeing what the avalible light had to offer. So throw in your two cents on how I could light these locations. The shot that has the girl looking through the port window will have the popcorn maker off when we shoot. So there won't be the glare of it.

Re: Test Shots(Shards of Darkness)

well i mean, if u want it that dark then i guess u got it. U u wanted to see more then i guess u need some sort of really braod really diffused source to light everyhting a littlebit

Re: Test Shots(Shards of Darkness)

Is this with the anamorphic adapter?

The shot of her walking down the stairs is pretty sweet.

It would look menacing if it was a big scary dude rather than a girl in a baseball cap.

Re: Test Shots(Shards of Darkness)

I'm just using her as a test subject. There will be a guy goin up the stairs in the short. No I didn't use an adapter. I also like the shot on her walking down the stairs. I think because its back lit. Diffused light is what I was thinking also because it is really dark in there.

Re: Test Shots(Shards of Darkness)

Only the girl looking through the window and comning down the step look professional. These Images looks rich and moody. Others with lots of flat darkness in more than 50% of the shot in my openion not professional(I will never say bad ;) It might work if there is a camera movement. U need to reveal some more shapes in the darkness to make the shots work better.

Re: Test Shots(Shards of Darkness)

Thanks for the suggestions. The girl in these shots might be in the short. She's really wants to be in it. She's my girlfriend so I at least have to think about it. It's not like I'm going to put someone in my short that has no ability. She's been in some stuff and knows how to act. These shots were just used to see what kind of avalible light there was. It won't be how the short is shot. Except for the stairs, I'm sure they could use a little more light but not much. The booth stuff really needs something in there because it is too dark.

Re: Test Shots(Shards of Darkness)

I really, really like that second scene. I would suggest throwing something in the corner to cause some more shadows and define the objects a little more. I know these are test shots, but if the second shot was framed just 6 inches more to the left you could pick up the back corner of the room and really get a feel for the dimensions of the room a little more. (and pop a light low and straight up there)

Just my opinion, keep us posted on the clips when you start shooting. Good luck with it!

Re: Test Shots(Shards of Darkness)

The 3rd shot [looking through the window, "popcorn" reflected] is very, very nice.

Re: Test Shots(Shards of Darkness)

I think some color would help. Her green shirt is where my eyes always goto because it is the only thing colorful in the shots. So keep that stuff in mind. You have to light so that you know where your audience will be looking when they watch it.

eyes follow saturated over desaturated colors, sharp focus over out-of-focus, brighter lit objects over darker objects, and movement as well. in most of these shots her shirt is brighter than her face .. which brings up the obvious problems.

Re: Test Shots(Shards of Darkness)

I guess its a good thing that the actor won't be wearing that shirt. It would be like moths to a flame. The actor that will be in the short will more than likely be wearing some kind of dark shirt or jacket. I know that might be a problem but as long as they can see some of his face I should be okay. Also I could use shadows and back lighting to bring him out.
