Test footage from the PXW-Z90

For those who may be interested, I've posted some footage that I shot over the weekend with the Z90 Sony has loaned me. his is some test footage As you know, the Z90 is still under development by Sony and the final version won't be released until December 2017. The purpose of this video was to check the camera's performance, features, and settings to see what results I could get and where their limitations lay. Some of the footage is less than perfect as I continued to make changes to refine the settings as I went along. For example, some highlights are blown out that shouldn't be, colors are inconsistent, and some scenes are overly sharp. But I have posted it all anyway so that I can evaluate how it looks once it is posted online. Now that this initial testing has been completed and I have nearly finalized my Picture Profile settings, the next round of testing should result in footage that is more consistent and looks better overall.

Thanks for sharing and I see what you meant with the less than great images. This form and functions is appealing but I don't know about image quality and I've never been satisfied with Sonys 1" sensors.

Well. all the experimentation and testing paid off and now I feel like I've got a couple of good Picture Profiles dialed-in to shoot with going forward. I'm confident that the next round of shooting will look much better. I think the camera looks great, especially for the price, once you get it setup right and expose in the sweet spot.

I gotta say, the first shot with the detail on the seagull made my jaw drop. For a $3K palmcorder, no less. Really interested in seeing what the next level of video looks like.

It's late in coming Doug but I'm sure glad you still have this sampler online. I haven't seen it until now. It's a fresh inspiration for me to smarten up and get better. Much better. There's maybe 30 seconds out of this trial compilation of yours where I could say "Yeah, that looks like what I'm getting."
I got my FDR-AX700 in 2020 and immediately purchased your Master Class but I'm not getting a lot of field time that stimulates my creativity, what with the COVID-19 thing and all. Mostly I got it for indoor interviews and profiles of artists at work which has been severely curtailed.

Hi Charlie, thank you for the compliments. The Z90 is an amazing little camera that performs much better than you'd ever expect for a little prosumer camcorder. Mine paid for itslef a few times over just from stock. Yes, COVID brought a lot of indoor production to a screeching halt, but anytime is good time to get outside and enjoy the fresh air and do some shooting. If we were having this conversation two years ago I would have suggested you pivot and get out and shoot for fun or even for stock footage as often as you can. I find that shooting for stock gives me a legitimate excuse to get out and shoot whatever I feel like. It's good for my mental health and it keeps my shooting skills sharp. I'm not saying there is any reason you shouldn't spend more time shooting today, but I imagine with Covid fading away your indoor work will start coming back online.

Hello Mr. Jensen,

Is there much difference between z90 and x70? Is there an advantage over the x70?

Hello Takumarr, the X70 was released more than 9 years ago and has since been discontinued. I've never seen one in person, so I have no first-hand knowledge of its features or performance. Sorry.
