Tennis talk

Well in that case.

Roland Garros has been alot of players weaknesses. Bravo to Andre for winning all 4 surfaces! And here is truly unique statistic:

Jimmy Connors holds a record unique in US Open competition and one that will probably never be matched, much less broken. He is the only player, male or female, to win the singles championship on three different surfaces. Connors won in 1974 on the grass at Forest Hills, in 1976 on the clay court (Har-Tru) then in use at the West Side Tennis Club and in 1978 on the hard-court surface (DecoTurf II) at the USTA National Tennis Center

Who said we couldn't ? We can talk about the womans game. Steffi isn't the best tennis player ever; only the best womans tennis player ever.

Tell that to the 28 year old I'm hitting 100 mph passing shots from the baseline on last week  :engel017: I think he'd say I was playing right.

---

I don't think anyone said you said that.

I believe this was the general prediction all along.

---

My opinion on the greatest ever ? Sampras (I grudgingly admit) :undecided

My favorite player ever ? Connors. On pure Never say die guts!

Best womans player ever? Steffi

Favorite womans player ? Capriati.

Wow, 100 miles per hour passing shot!

I think its matter of semantics Ii believe. When u say "greatest player ever", are you saying that the greatest player can only be a man? Or are you taking into account women as well? Does the title of "greatest player ever" only apply to men? Im not trying to start the old battle of the sexes thang, I just seek clarification. Anyways, your the man, John!
Besides, all this is subjective. You like who u like in the end.

I think it has to be a man; since the best woman cant beat the man (generally speaking). Graff isn't going to beat a guy in the top 1000 in her prime. It comes down to simply stronger and faster.

How can the best player not be able to beat ANYONE / ANYTIME ?

You are correct; I love Capriati but I think most people wouldnt think twice of her as a great player and may even consider her an underachiever and a wasteful career by most persons standards. (I'm speculating on what others may percieve)

Of course, for me I see a former World Number 1, 3 Grand Slams, an Oympic Gold Medal (beating Steffi in her prime no less !) and one of the greatest come backs in sports history (winning a 2002 ESPY for Best Comeback Athlete for her play in 2001).

I don't buy it. In her prime she couldn't be a man ranked 1000th? I don't think that one will stand up.:undecided If you'd said the top 100, yeah; the top 200 probably not but...

I'll tesitfy to that. I strongly believe this.

She's great. The woman players are amazing talent's but just cant compete with the men.

Look at it this way:

Only in the Men's game does the serve dominate. Not the woman's. The Top Men serve at the US OPEN 2005 was Roddick at 150 MPH. The women? V Williams at 122 MPH. That's 30 MPH swing !

Ace Leaders that year ?

Federer at 77. Thw woman? 23 ! Now that stat is a telltale.

--

The fastest Junior serve at the Aussie was 123 MPH ! That's from a highschool kid.

While I'll agree that even the top rated woman is no match for the top rated men, it would be great to see the top rated woman play a lower tiered man to see what would happen. It's not exactly the same thing but remember Bobby Riggs/Billie J. King? Maybe it's time for an update.

I would have thought the same thing in GOLF  but Annika has shown she can hang with the men...maybe not the best men but still ranked men. Playing from the men's tees.

In sports that feature power men are going to have a natural advantage but the very best women can still compete, perhaps at a diminished level but still...

I don't remember her name, but what about that woman softball pitcher that embarrasses men batters, including some major leaguers?

Consider this:

Remember when Jimmy Connor's beat Martina Navriatilova in that Battle of the Sexes 2 match ? Connors was allowed only one serve and had to cover the doubles alleys and worked her ass. Don't think she wasn't trying her ass off.

She was ranked Number 4 while he was ranked 84. And that wasn't a normal Ranked 84 player, he was Jimbo over age 40 !

Age of todays Ranked 84 player? 30
Ranked 85 ? Age 25
Ranked 83? Age 25

--

Tennis is beautiful considering most players are out by age 30 (Props to the 30 somethings still contending: Aggassi, Mary Pierce, Lindsay Davenport)

--

My prediction is the 1360 Ranked (THe last ranked player on the tour) Peter Miklusicak can beat the Number one woman player. Graff, Martina, Sharpova, Henne-Hardenne, Davenport, whoever.

--

And golf doesnt count, they're not competing against the men directly. Only against themselves and the course. (Opens up Pandoras Box)

Well, the problem here is we really have no way to prove it. My beef isn't with her beating the 80th or 84th or 85th ranked player but c'mon, the 1000th ranked player? Who IS the 1000th ranked player?

I know you were using a far fetched example to make your point, the point being that as long as the top ranked woman can't beat an average ranked male player, how can you place them among the greatest of all time? But that example works with any physically dominated sport...track and field...swimming...basketball...baseball...tennis... boxing... Woman are just not physically equal to men but we DO remember certain woman as greats in their sport. Flo-Jo, Babe Didrickson, Annika Sorenstam, Martina Navratalova, Picabo Street, Stefi Graff, Janet Evans... the road goes on forever.

Of course of course ! I agree 100 % !

I have tons of respect, admiration and love for the womens game (Tennis)

I can't think of other woman's sports I actually like. The WNBA is horrendous to watch.

Yeah, the Riggs/King thing comes up a lot. But he was 55; she was in her prime at 29. They also made rules exceptions to level the playing field -- they played on courts of different sizes.

John....
You are so NOT RIGHT on so many levels.....
Maybe a happy compromise somewhere in between???

Yes D

Much is made of the Battle of the Sexes and for all the wrong reasons. Less we forget Riggs beat Margaret Court 4 months elarlier and she was 31. In fact, she was the Number 1 Ranked womens player at the time; that year she had complied a Singles Record: 14-1 Match record in Singles as well as winning 3 of the 4 Majors:

Winning the:

Australian Open
French Open
Finalist at Wimbledon (Losing to Chrissy)
Winning the U.S. Open

I actually play Tennis at Bobby Riggs Tennis Center he once owned.

---

There are juniors that can serve the ball at 120 MPH much less some dude Ranked 1350 in the world. Look at it this way; take a player like Roddick or Agassi when they first surfaced onto the tour as young lads; Agassi was Ranked 603 in the world and Roddick surfaced at 512. There ain't no women at any time that could beat them at that time in their careers.

Good point on Riggs beating Court -- that had slipped my mind. To be fair, though -- not that it ultimately would have mattered -- Court played like crap in that match.
