Tennis talk

I cannot wait for human error to be taken out of the game.

I watched Sharapova / Henin-Hardenne this evening and Maria lost 2 critical points to bad calls from the lines person

One was at brea kpoint and the other at game point. It would have had her up in the 3rd at least 3 - 2 and possibly 4 - 2.

Anyway's just thinking out loud to any tennis fans interested. It was great match with some top level tennis and Maria is just smoking anyway

Are there any plans to switch over to some type of laser defined boundary?

I really don't know much about tennis, but that didn't stop me from running camera on a match between Monica Seles and Stefi Graf for ESPN about 5 years ago. :)

I like the bad calls. It's part of what makes an otherwise boring televised sport interesting. If there wasn't human error, we wouldn't have had one of the most memorable moments in sports ("YOU CANNOT BE SERIOUS!" - Although now that I think about it, that moment might have been even bigger if McEnroe was yelling at a computer). Was watching Grosjean and Keifer and Keifer throwing his racket in the middle of the point to distract Grosjean, winning the point, and then not having it overturned, was one of the worst calls I've ever seen. But in a match full of really good tennis points, guess what fans talk about after the match? That moment. I think the players know that it all evens out. Sharapova's had her share of calls go her way.

oh, and what's with Sharapova's dress? It's not like her to go baggy. Looks like we have a Wimblemum on our hands.

Tennis isn't boring.

But point taken about Mac -- though Mac DOES yell at Cyclops a lot.

Just saw Mac in Courier's tournament in Houston. Yup. He's still got the hot blood.

im not a tennis fan but watched a match the other night. these players have amazing strength. impressive stuff. Sharapova is hot btw.

in action. like the wardrobe too.

I've gotta agree with the human error element making it more interesting. That's part of what makes baseball so great. But that's another story. With tennis or any sport where there are referees, you are going to have bad calls but that is part of the game. Did someone say instant replay. Throw the red flag.

I think Seles invented the screaming.

Point taken about human error and the tangible quality that bring's to the sport. It's a sticky subject I suppose, but tell this to the player's who get screwed.

Jesus, I play against kooks weekly that make call's that are just so obscene I pray I had Cyclops on my side. Bitches.

I see the side of the coin that it brings to the table but in the end I think the right calls being made are simply an evolution of the sport. Like the NFL, NBA and the talk of MLB adopting a sorta Cyclops I think in the end it would be the right thing to do.

If one is watching tennis to talk about bad calls later.... well then, pffffttt.

But boring c.g. eads ? What matches have you been watching ? Last night's match was far from boring.

Yes. Tennis will keep a girl fit and has some nice eye candy lately; not boring at all.

Heh heh Coffee (that's what Rome call's her. He call's Serena Predator 2.)

The best part is all these girls have stick; I mean they can ****ing ball.

I love watching tennis. I could watch two guys ranked 500 in the world battle for 6 hours in the Jack Jones Super-scrub Classic. But for the general public, I think tennis is a boring sport to watch on TV. There's very little camera movement. And if you've never played, it's hard to appreciate the level of difficulty involved in what these guys do. I know they have a racket and not a bat, but tennis players have to return a 140-150 m.p.h. serve compared to baseball's 90-95 m.p.h. Oh yeah, and did I mention there's no strike zone?

Plus you can't really see how hard they're hitting on television. That can only be acheived by being there, and is what has converted my non-tennis watching friends into tennis fans. Anyway, yeah, all these Russians are super-hot. But don't Russian women age the worst out of any country? I think I heard that somewhere. So enjoy them now. In ten years, Sharapova will be 300 pounds and look like Dennis Farina... with a thicker mustache of course.

That's a nice take c.g. eags

The fastest serve ever recorded is 153 mph by Roddick.

The average serve however is around 100 ish to 115 ish on the mens tour (strangely depends on surface; clay, grass, hard)

For baseball I would say hitting one is probably the hardest thing to do in sports. Period. Consider the last guy to bat .400 was T Williams in 1941! That's 4 out of every 10. Bizarre.

---

It is a shame that most people do not watch tennis. The sport is on the decline with no Americans in the top positions other than Roddick (3) and Agassi (7); then what? Ginepri ? Blake ? Please. Their never going to do anything.

As far as Russians aging ? I have no idea. But I'll put money on your Sharapova prediction!

Tennis rules and I can't believe I took off 7 years from the sport (Not pissed; I was playing alot of BBALL). Tonight I played doublkes and we were down 5 - 0 and 40 - 0 only to come back and lose 7 - 6 (7 - 3).

Man it was great; the emotions were there.

Yikes! Have you seen some of the retired gymnasts? There's just not enough

Don't get me started on Roddick. I think he's a poser and will start to drift down the rankings. Players have him figured out (aka - hit to his backhand - funny how the strategy you learned in junior tennis is the same strategy you use at the pro level). Sure, when his serves are on he's number 2 in the world. But when they're off, he's closer to 30.

I agree with you, John. Gnepri and Blake are such also-rans. Supposedly this guy's the next big thing: http://www.indystar.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20050717/SPORTS/507170430/1004/SPORTS

But I saw him play and wasn't that impressed. I hope so, though. Cause tennis could use some more publicity in this country.

p.s. I'd still like to see the Serena vs. McEnroe match they were talking about a few years ago. I think Mac would win 7-5, 6-2.
