Tennis talk

Yes yes

I have heard of this young man. American tennis could be doing good by him ! (Remember when there were like 7 of 10 Americans in Top 10? )

Jim Rome is an egocentric arsemunch. I loved it when Jim Everett made him cower to the ground on the set of his own show. Priceless.

Tennis is so much more exciting to watch live than on TV. I think the human error makes the pro game more like the recreational game. We've all had to deal with bad line calls and I know how hard it is to get that out of your mind. That's why I like watching Marat Safin. When he self destructs and loses to a less talented player it reminds me of my own self-destruction in past tournaments.

It's shame people don't watch simply because American men don't dominate. Roger Federer is the most amazing player ever and most people don't even know his name!

Terry

Rome can be an arsemunch for sure; but he knows his sports and usually has it right. He has the best takes in sports. (Sides; Chris, er Jim Everett was kind of a girl on the field.)

Roger Federer is the most amazing player ever and most people don't even know his name!

You are right. Most non-tennis fans are like 'Who ?'

And we have had this conversation before. The man is the real deal; but let's not start handing out the "BEST EVER' title just yet

The mens final I feel is going to be fun to watch. I believe Federer will win, but I expect Baghdatis will give Roger a run for his money. Look for Federer winning in 4.

I say 'UPSET' !

Baghdatis was a world junior champion and the Australian Open junior champion in 2003. He also reached the fourth round at the Aussie in 2005. He also has the support from the fans. He is the true darkhorse and cinderella story.

I say Baghdatis

4 - 6, 6 - 2, 7 - 5, 1 - 6, 7 - 5

(Only because I believe in Miracles!)

You're probably right about throwing out phrases like "best ever," John. I figured since Rod Laver was saying it about Federer, it was okay to follow suit. I don't see Baghdatis beating Roger, but anything's possible.

Federer is scary good. I'm still voting for Sampras as "best ever", but I would love to see those two duke it out if they were both in their prime.

Federer has a way to go to prove he's the best ever. He's definitely in a class by himself right now, but "best ever" candidates have a way of flaming out -- Martina Hingis was totally unstoppable for a while, but then along came the Williamses and that was that. And the Williamses were unbeatable until a few Belgians came around. So "best ever" is reserved for Steffi Graf and Pete Sampras right now. I mean, Pete was fighting stomach flu, barfed, and then still came back and won the match!

But if Federer puts together a grand-slam sweep, he may very well snatch that title from Sampras. If Sampras had only won the French at least once he'd be a pretty solid lock for the title, but that Federer is really good... really, really good... I mean, last night when Kiefer had the audacity to steal a 7-5 set from Federer, Federer answered with a 6-0 smackdown in the next set.

I wouldn't call him the best ever, at least not yet, but I do think he's on the path where he could earn that title.

Federer is a knee injury or a burnout away from being a noteworthy footnote. He's got a long way to go before you can start talking about "ever."

Other astonishing talents have fizzled quickly for one reason or another. Until he actually racks up the numbers, it's a little premature.

EDIT: Well, shoot; Barry said all this.

I dissagree with Barry, John, and Dave. Yes, Pete Sampras was a dynamic tennis player, but Roger is by far the most well rounded and consistent tennis player I have ever seen. He masters every aspect of the game so well. Yes, Pete Sampras will always be known as the greatest serve and volleyer, but I feel Federer will ultimately be the greatest overall tennis player. But I do understand where all of you all are coming from with Sampras. For example, Sampras was absolutely dominant in the mid to late 90's...heck he single handedly almost killed the sport of tennis he was so dominant. However, what gave Sampras his legendary status in American tennis was ultimately his rivalry with players like agassi, phillipousus, etc... Also, the dynamics between Agassi and Sampras were legendary. They made watching tennis fun again. That being said,Federer does not have an equal right now. Agassi challenged him some these last few years but ultimately just poo pooed to federer this last US open. And if you want to know how dominant this 23 yr old is (Federer), just listen to what Agassi had to say just after his loss to Federer in that open. He was flabergasted. Also, Roger Federer is only 23 years old and already has 7 slam titles. His win/ loss record is just mind boggling. If Federer wins this open I have a feeling he will win the french as well. These two slams have been his achilles hill sorta speak. I believe he has finally adapted his game to where he can play on slower surfaces like the aussie open and the the courts of Roland Garos. I dont think he will win all 4 grandslams this yr (though i wouldnt be surprisedif he did), but I do believe he will eventually have all 4 salms under his belt...which is a feat that Pete Sampras never did. So, in conclusion, I believe Federer is already considered one of the most amazing tennis players in the history of the ATP, and he still has a long long career ahead of him. Also, the great Rod Laver was quoted saying that Federer was the best he had ever seen. I dont know about you, but I dont think Rod Laver would say that about just anyone.

That is the point

Sampras has 14 Grand Slam Titles

14

Australian Open W ('94, '97)
French Open SF (1996)
Wimbledon W ('93-'95; '97-'00)
US Open W ('90, '93, '95, '96, '02)

---

Roger has 7.

7.

Rioger needs to win 7 more titles. That's a career Slam this year and 3 more the next. Let's say he win's the Aussie, Wimbledon and the U.S. this year.

That is still 4 more to go. That is quite a feat.

I never said anything about Sampras. Federer still has a ways to go to match a number of great players.

Look, anything can happen. Seles was supposedly on her way, too, and some German nut stabbed her. That ended that.

But often, and after watching tennis for 25 years, I've seen it happen many times, people who looked destined for the book of legend hit a wall -- injury, burnout, or someone else comes out of nowhere and cleans their clocks.

Federer may go the distance. But as of TODAY, talk of it is very premature.

Hahhahaha

Anything that involves a group of people repeatedly punching me in the face

EDIT: So in other words - Prison Gang Boxing

Shiiieeeeeeeettttttttttttttttttttttttttt Monte

I'll get you on the court and it'll feel like it was Prison Gang Boxing when I get done with you !

But as of TODAY, talk of it is very premature.
