Temperature Question

I have a concern regarding temperature and the DVX. I live in California, and it does not get really cold here, but I wanted to be sure that I did not damage my DVX. I always keep the camera in a Pelican case, but I accidentally left the camera on my porch (in the case) outside overnight. The temperature fell to between 46-53 degrees. Anything to worry about?

Thanks!

Just check for any codensation...otherwise this is not too low a temperature to worry about.

No sweat at all!

I've taken a small PV-GS70 to Barrow Alaska (roughly around the artic circle) with VERY cold temperatures and didn't have problems (granted, these were relatively brief periods of time).

This is all good to know. It got down to 15 degrees last night in Chicago and I didn't take out my 100A . . . just in case.

I suppose the condensation trouble comes from bringing it back inside. Is wrapping it in a towel before bringing it inside enough of a precaution?

She's precious to me.

Put it in a big ziplock bag instead.

Let's assume that condensation does form; then I would have to wait a few days before I am able to shoot again.
I have a shoot tomorrow nite (here in Chicago) and am wondering about this issue. When I leave my apartment where it's nice and warm to the harsh cold outside to shoot; should I be worried about condensation. BTW I don't have a camera case/bag to put my dvx in. I use a gym bag packed with foam.

Condensation happens when a COLD camera is brought in into relatively more humid surroundings, just inside a heated house, that is. So taking a warm camera out is not dangerous, bringing it back in cold is. Solution: put the camera inside an airtight plastic bag and let it warm up for a few hours before taking it out of the bag (unless you continue shooting outside again). You can speed up the warming by gently heating the camera/bag combo if necessary. I have been forced to do that in several occasions, placing the camera on the top of a lukewarm stove, heating it over a cooking range etc....

I do not have the manual handy, but the camera should be able to take temperatures between maybe 40C to -20C ( 105 to -5 F), at least a lot of video gets shot at those extremes, too.

I have shot a lot at below freezing (with TRV900) with no problems what so ever. Exept that the lens tends to fog up inside sometimes. No problems with tape heads getting damp. Just a while back I had the TRV900 outside on the mountains for 5 weeks, temperatures fluctuating from 5 to -20 C with no problems.

Many times I have left my car unlocked overnight on the driveway with 20000$ worth of gear in the back. Actually the back door lock in my Defender did not work for a month, so the truck was basically unlocked also in the city, with the gear in there... Our house doors are often left unlocked for the day (by kids), usually not locked for the night.

But, then again, this is Finland...

Holy crap, and I thought I was insane for leaving my DVX in my car even when it is locked. That's a risk in a place like Dallas.

Yeah...I am not proud about leaving that equipment out, but then again, as some posters have mentioned, who has not forgot to lock the car on occasion (average $20,000- $60,000) investment???????
