television silence?

When I was little, nobody believed me when I told them that I could hear the television was on when it was muted :( . What causes this high frequency? :undecided

Wanna know what causes what you're hearing?

It's usually caused by the individual wires on the threaded coil (at the end part of the tube) being loosened. I believe an old trick was to put epoxy on the coils. Or it could be the flyback.

Don't worry, you're not insane, I heard that sound too. :undecided

I can mute a TV that's heard in another room of the house. I use a remote. I can't explain it.

Sorry, couldn't resist. :)

I believe it's the high cycle hum from the tube. I've always noticed that too... how you can tell if there's a tv on in a room before you even enter it (with it muted).

Oh yeah, I can hear just about any CRT when it's on if it's quiet. - And many LCDs actually.
I can come home and from 2 rooms away wonder why someone left the TV on muted.

..Ironically, our TV has a built in radio feature, but for some reason in Radio mode the picture tube is still on (but in black). Funny thing is when someone mutes the radio.. It's black and quiet [seem to be off], but the whole thing is still powered up.. ..and still has that hum.. :P

Man, I thought I was something special because I could hear this too. Now you are probably going to tell me I can't control lightning.
