Teleconverter not working in GH2 manual mode

A friend has the GH2 and for some reason we can't figure out how to get the teleconverter to work in manual dial setting for still or video. It works in the movie dial mode though. This wasn't the case for me, mine worked fine... but then today, For some reason when I tried out a new lens today the teleconverter wouldn't work in manual dial but it was fine in cinema dial. I can't say what I did but it wasn't able to do the push in. However a little while later I was able to get it to work.

My question is... is there a mode or option that doesn't allow this to work in stills mode? in manual mode? Etc.

Thanks in advance....

i dont own a gh2 yet but tele is a function that crops the sensor right? so if you are in any stills mode it wont work because in essence you are cropping from a whole image. you may as well just crop it in photoshop. it makes sense to me that it will only work in movie mode (not movie in stills mode) cause it is using native resolution of the sensor.

I think the firmware might still be a bit buggy, I've noticed the same on my GH2. At the start when I had it ETC wool apply to both stills and video mode, no matter the dial position. Then I reset all the settings and custom profiles after I had something get stuck. After that ETC only works for video. I thought it might have been just me from playing around with too many options, but since you've got the same problem maybe it's something else

There is no reason for it to work in stills mode because you can just crop your stills in post.

It works just fine in both stills and video mode for every single option on the control wheel except for iAUTO. You have to be in .jpg only mode though. It is deactivated if you are shooting any type of RAW files. I even use it for the 1080p slow motion mode. With my Canon 55m F1.2 it gives me the ability to shoot 1/120 of a second slow motion video in very low light.

I programed the Fn2 button with the ETC on/off switch to give me the ability to basically turn my prime lenses into zoom lenses.

It will work on stills. However, you have to change the picture size to something smaller than full resolution. And like everyone else said in stills mode it gains you nothing that can't be done in post. Shooting RAW gives you way more benefit than being able to crop in camera while you are framing the image.

Well that's part of the solution with the crop... BUT... my point here is that it's not working. It's not enabled for stills or video when in any mode except for the dedicated cinema/movie mode. Sometimes I want to be in the manual mode and pop off some stills and also pop off some video without having to move dials.... and that's also the deal that my buddy wants to work out.

It's also nice to have exactly what you want and be able to use the teleconverter to punch in without having to crop.. cause this also wouldn't work if you were shooting low resolution, or in our case, if you were shooting video in the manual mode or another mode.

I just want to figure out why it wasn't working on mine, and why it's not working on my buddy. If I'm also shooting high res photos, or video... I don't want to have to push in. Just want to have it work, and again, there maybe a setting or something that wasn't or isn't working correctly.

cheers

I also think it's a bit like that old joke where the guy says... Hey Dr., my arm hurts when I do this... and the doc says.. hey don't do that. I just would like to know why it wasn't working on my camera, and why it's not working on my buddy's camera...

I think it's something to do with the custom settings, or maybe the function buttons... but I'm also spitballing here... Would be nice to just figure this out. I also think there's a lot of extra "consumer" quality options and layouts... Does really make a person miss the simplicity of the 7d in that respect.

Thanks.... That might explain some of this, but it won't work if we opt to shoot movie mode. Maybe though it's cause we have it in Raw... Not sure. I'll have him check that out...

I did the same thing with the function button and it's very cool indeed. The other one that I have is the intelligent auto option as a button. It would be great if we could have the highlight option set at a button too. I like using that, but I'd like to be able to turn it off for using with a monitor/ on the LCD>

Well, one thing that makes it not work, is having the HDMI cable plugged in. If you had a monitor attached, you'd lose ETC.

Well that solved my problem with it, it was because I was in RAW + JPG mode, guess it's so you can take a photo during filming, would be nice if it defaulted back to JPG during film mode so it didn't disable ETC

I'm having this issue as well. No ETC in stills mode, but it does work in Video mode. In stills mode I'm set to M for quality and Jpeg so it's not that issue. It's not hooked up to HDMI, though it was at one point but no cable in there right now. The ETC works just fine when I shoot movies but when I switch to still it won't work. Anyone else with this issue?

Just did some experimenting with my camera (I didn't bother with the manual).

Yes, ETC works for stills in JPEG mode -- but only at medium (8M, 3264x2448) and small (4M, 2336x1752) picture size settings.

If you set the picture size to large (16M, 4608x3456), it won't work -- even for JPEGs.

EDIT: Ragnar, I see above that you said:

In stills mode I'm set to M for quality and Jpeg so it's not that issue.

So my solution doesn't seem to meet your need -- sorry.

Anyone else with this issue? In stills mode taking a picture with the ETC mode to ON, I get no image zoom in the viewfinder or on the LCD. In Movie Mode with ETC ON the image I'm focusing on is indeed zoomed in. Hmmmm. It's a head scratcher. I took several pics in stills mode and looked at them both in Playback mode and on my PC thinking perhaps ETC did its thing but wasn't showing it, but no, the ETC in stills mode didn't take effect and wasn't visible, both.

Can I reset my GH2 to factory defaults? I see in the manual I can do some sort of reset under menu page 5 of settings but is that back to factory defaults?

Guys, remember to report ALL suspicious bugs to Panny... this is the only way we will ever get a firmware (=hack)
