Tele Stacking

Lucky Duck
As some of you know, I have experimented with stacking two teleconverters together to get a longer reach.

I had a Century 58mm 2x teleconverter for my old camera which I attached to the DVX lens via a step down ring 72mm - 58mm. I then put the DVX Century 1.6x in front of that and slid my matte box in front of that tele to keep it in place.

This gives me an effective focal length of 144mm. I have to be 100% zoomed in or it will severly vignette so I'm just treating this setup like I would a prime lens. The nice thing about this for me is that I have the added reach for wildlife but for other subjects, it affords me a pretty shallow depth of field.

Below are two stills and at the bottom is some sample footage with this setup:

Wow ! That's great !

I personally think vignetting can be used to advantage (artistic choice). Looks wonderful.

How far away are you from the young lad ?

Any chance of a kind of before and after ? Or a Stock, then with one, then with another ?

Very cool.. on the video it looks like you had some camera shake, probably because of the wind and the long lens. I'm assming you have to shoot from a tripod with all the glass on the front?

How does the Century 58mm 2x teleconverter image look just by itself?

Camera shake was because this was grip and rip...and yes, it is highly sensitive to shake with this setup.

John, I was about 40 ft away from my son for that shot. About 20 feet away from the duck.

the 2x just looks like it says, double the size of the picture but, again, because it is so much smaller than the 72mm DVX lens, it has to be zoomed in all the way.

I'll do some before and after stuff at some point. Don't have time right now....

Like jello but the rig looks awesome

The lenses have to be completely snug or there will be visible chromatic abberation similar to what you see on the 35mm adapters. These shots were not affected.

Hey disjecta, beautiful footage as alwasy, even for a test.

I have noticed that your grabs suffers from a little noise though. Is this due to the uprezzing process?
I think I have found something that might help you with that, I tried it with one of your grabs just to see if it works. I hope you don't mind

I think it turned out pretty nice. The software is called Neat Image ---> http://www.neatimage.com/
I didn't believe it at first but it does a pretty fine job. Only the pro version can batch images however. So, if you want to go through yet another batching process after PhotoZoom, this might be what you're looking for. :)

didn't post my comment in last post. DVXuser is getting very buggy. None of smileys work or formatting. Anyway Just saying that I think Norbert is Neat for posting Neat Image link. thanks. I like Photozoom before but this will allow more cinelike footage. Great find thank you very much. thank you disjecta for introducing all of us to the concept of photozoom unprezzing technique. it is a huge addition to my projects.

BUMP____why do things go bump here?_____is it to get the posts back up to the top?______if so then why say bump, why not say is anyone out there____I just finished downloading neat image and I already have photozoom.____this is exciting. _______Norbert you have to make sure everyone knows about that software._____and what happened to formatting ability on dvxuser._______i am not the only bugs on here.________ i have to put dashes now to seperate sentences so they don't mush together.

I have discovered that it doesn't work well for all images. The image has to have some kind of uniform area like the background in disjecta's duck image or the whole image will turn out somewhat smudged. You should definitely try it though if you have trouble with noise, it could work.

Dang D, this looks great. I wish you lived near some Puffins. If you ever go out to shoot some though, let me know. I would pay for some shots.
