TED movie - Video look?

Hey there guys,
I just watched TED, and some takes left me somehow a little riddled.. they looked very video-ish.
IMDB stated the movie was shot on a Panavision Genesis. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1637725/technical
My prime suspects are:
- Color correction: Shadows dialed down more than they "should"?
- Shutter speed: Sometimes fast panning and fast moving scenes had a more noticeable motion blur...

Anyway.. I'm just speculating, but I'm confident there's something funny about this movie's look.

If you have seen it, please share your comments... If you havent.. well, when you watch it, let me know.

Thanks guys!

PS: I saw this movie in Digital Proyection.

You probably know this already, but just in case..... The Genesis is a digital camera, not film. :)

From the Panavision website: "The image processing is built right into the camera. You can see your true image during shooting and make changes while the camera is rolling."
Maybe they got carried away with the in-camera image tweaking.

Could be!
Another thing I was thinking, is that I noticed it the most during an action scene.. (no spoliers), so I was thinking that they could've used a different camera for it..

Don't get me wrong, at no point I'm saying it looked bad. I'm just curious to know why some scenes seemed to have a video look, something like Collateral. (Sony F900 - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0369339/technical)

The reason for posting this is to actually learn what ingredients contributed to that look, whether accidental or deliberate. Specially since it was recorded on a Super35mm sensor camera, contrary to the F900's smaller one.

Cheers.

It's a shutter thing it looks like. I remember seeing the trailer and thinking the same thing. It's not the look of the color or shadows, it's the way the motion looks. Collateral used a 1/24th shutter often for the night scenes. If it's not a shutter problem, then it could be how the Genesis captures motion overall...not sure. Either way it has to do with the blur...it's easy to see.

Funny, I was too busy laughing my *ss off and never noticed a thing.

Isn't that what we say to the gear freaks & pixel peepers? Story, acting, sound, cinematography...

I'm glad you enjoyed the movie. I enjoyed it too.
I posted this topic in order to clear some doubts based on my perception of a TECHNICAL aspect of the movie.
More especifically a cinematography aspect of the movie. If I wanted to review the script or acting I would've posted it in the proper category.
If you dont have anything constructive to post regarding the topic in question, then keep it for yourself or the concearning topics.

Why the bad adittude after only 32 posts?

Oh my GOD I'm so SORRY!!! I don't know what I was THINKING!!! I will really try to control my rabid, frantic, off-topic posting from now on.

Really. I'm a humbled and changed man - broken, you might say. Sometimes I just don't know when I'm going to go INSANELY OFF THE RAILS like that. Some people - the strong, the tough, those with great dental hygiene and giant reproductive organs, those hummer-driving masses of muscle with a supermodel on each arm who don't just know what "menage a trois" means, they live it, man - they can take it, they don't always drink beer, but when they do, LOOK THE HELL OUT! DOS EQUIS, man!!! (I bet that David W. Jones is such a man, and I thank him for coming to my defense - once the singer of the acclaimed "Monkees" and now interested in the arts du cinematique {that's french!}{sorta french anyway - but that "menage a trois, that was for-real french, believe me, I know - winkwink!!}, he claims you have a bad attitude, but really, do you? Maybe I just post too much. Maybe when a subject such as this comes up, I sit here, typing away, struggling for words, the right words, not just any words. Maybe I need an editor. You... YOU COULD BE MY EDITOR, you Sibero80, sitting here, gently guiding me as I post, when I veer off topic you could soundly SMACK me in the head with a ruler or perhaps a length of construction rebar, set me back upon the proper course, and maybe check my grammar as well).

You see, as I wrote above, some can handle these minor digressions, these (to use a hiking metaphor {do you hike? it's fun!}) tiny footsteps off the beaten path, these quick divergences to "smell the roses" or maybe see if that roaring sound is a waterfall, some are Ok with this and perhaps will join in... but we never know, do we? We never know if one was, say, raped repeatedly by their aging alcoholic uncle as a child, and now, grown men themselves, find they lash out as such uninhibited wildness as I displayed when I brutally hijacked your thread... because it reminds them of those seedy night when their own innocence was so brutally hijacked. Yes, I know, some of us have suffered trauma and pain unspeakable, and when one replies here on these inter-webs that a filmic experience was engaging enough that they noticed not the glaring frame-rate artifacts, perhaps, to you, it's more than a mild annoyance - perhaps, you feel something quite like the brutal pain of these terrible childhood experiences. I had no intent of making you relive so profound and terrible a memory (or whatever that experience was, I'm sorta guessing "old pedo uncle", but I'm sure it could have just as well been a school teacher or cell-mate, for all I know, it could be anything - really - wasn't there!).

But as you can see, I have learned from this - I will work hard to keep my posts here on the money, concise, short n' sweet like this very reply I now concoct, and yet... still gripping, full of the pain and yes, the joy, of life, dripping with masculine sweat, pumped full of enough testosterone to keep a DNA lab busy for a week, with prose that makes the men lift a glass and the ladies drop a thong, until one day I am - hopefully - regarded in these parts with the same respect you have commanded on your thirty-second post. One can dream, anyway, one can dream.

And yes, the Genesis - it's digital.

Thank you DanKov - this event has darkened my mind indeed! It's left me a trembling mess (though that could be the diet pills, those things are awesome - try writing after a handful of the horse-sized capsules, the words just flow!) I have much, much more to say on this matter... should I? Should I???

LMFAO Mr. Carter. I think this should be a copy and paste response to anyone that gets easily offended by a poster not giving an answer the thread starter wants to hear. I thought Michael Carter gave an honest opinion. He didn't notice anything wrong with the way the film looked. I for the life of me can't understand why this is not a good enough answer.

Thank you Mr. MaranFilms (are you perhaps related to Countess Olivia de Schteinfreund Maranfilms? She once joined me for aperitifs after the theater - a wonderful and colorful woman, and the tricks she could do with her prosthetic leg - we all cried "bravo"!)

I had feared my thoughtless ejaculation of opinion was indeed uncalled for (say, this may be the first time the word "ejaculation" has been used on DVX user - I'll have to do a search!) upon seeing the pained reply from Sibero80. I feared it was a transgression so evil it could make Hitler blush - vile enough to cause even Dick Cheney to reach out a shaking robotic hand to gently touch Sibero80's fevered, pained brow with a kindness new to that stainless steel and carbon fiber pneumatic pump that Cheney's creators lodged in his fiberglas chest.

I stand chastened and corrected. But feel free to cut & paste - maybe we will see this story unfold in one of the "ScriptFest" threads, perhaps with a sword-duel added, and plenty of nudity!
